I played in the 3 1969/70 games and confirm details are 100% correct. I also watched the 1965/66 0-0 at the Recreation ground and Spurs win in the 2nd replay at Plainmoor. You have queried whether extra time was played in the 0-0 draw. Although I was there I can't remember it going to extra time although it was a replay so one would have thought so. However I have a feeling it finished at 90 minutes and went straight to the 2nd replay at Plainmoor.
It was that tie when Spurs knocked Torquay out of the FA Youth Cup that saw Spurs come under a nursery club arrangement with Torquay for the next 5 years.
Not much help I know, but I was only 13 in 1965 so am 70 now! Although I can still remember all the words of Yesterday not everything has stuck so well! 🤣⚽️

I played in the 1977-78 youth cup run. I have some newspaper clippings somewhere. Am still in touch with several of the players on that team who also played at TBGS: Andy Perrett, Stuart Foster, Maurice Cox, Robbie Hook (Teignmouth GS).

Thank you both, do either of you have "your" match dates for 69/70 & 77/78?

Thank you both, do either of you have "your" match dates for 69/70 & 77/78? Tuesday 4 November 1969 1-1 at Plainmoor. Apprentice pro Stuart McGowan gave us a 2nd minute lead (Herald Express wrongly reported at the time it was the other apprentice Phil Sandercock). Full time pro Mike Dowling equalised for Argyle 15 minutes from time with a penalty. A couple of years later Dowling scored a spectacular 30 yarder at Home Park against Pele's Santos in a 3-2 win for Argyle. I had played my first game at Home Park only a few days earlier Saturday 1 November 1969, for Devon in a 2-1 FA County Youth Cup defeat against Cornwall. Future Exeter and Argyle player Tony Kellow scored the winning goal for Cornwall. Monday 10 November 1969. Replay 1-1 at Home Park. Trainer Don Mills put our keeper from the first game Bob Gray up front as striker and brought Robbie Robbins in in goal. Phil Sandercock gave us the lead on 60 minutes with a 25 yarder into the top corner at the Devonport End beating future Tottenham keeper Peta Ba'lac hands down. Argyle equalised with 10 minutes to go after a rare mistake by Robbie Robbins who came for a high punted ball about 12 yards out but didn't get there and it was headed over him trickling into the net. Similar goal to our recent play off goal against Hartlepool other than it wasn't their keeper who scored it! Extra time produced no more goals. Monday 17 November 1969. 2nd replay at Home Park having lost the toss of the coin after first replay for venue. Lost 3-1. Ian Twitchin was our goal scorer. The only highlight that evening was the after match fish and chips on the coach from the chippy on Pennycomequick roundabout! Argyle went on to beat Brisol Rovers 5-2 in the 2nd round at Home Park before losing 2-0 to Bristol City again at Home Park in the 3rd round. Four of our team went on to play for Torquay in the Football League, Ian Twitchin, Phil Sandercock, Bob Gray, and Robbie Robbins, and future Torquay player Peter Darke was in the Argyle side. Twitchin, Sandercock, and Gray all made their Football League debuts in that 69/70 season while still youth players, and the level was equivalent to present day League 1 (then of course called Division 3) ... and we were one of the better teams in that division at the time. ⚽️

Hopefully up soon. How many games did you, Andy, Stu and Maurice play that season? United reserves and youth and even an end of season tour to Holland. School team reached the last four of the National Cup and Devon Youth joint winners of the National Counties Cup. Would it be cheeky to ask who pulled the trigger to cause the air gun injury?

Steffano, please remind me who you were in those good old days. I know you have told me before but, you know, I am now 69 and enjoying another glass of Sauv. Blanc. It was very much the Plymouth apprentices versus us two a/p and the brilliant legend Ian Twitch. I could, and I will in due course, say more of my not wholly wholesome experience at TUFC.

Hi Stuart, I am not actually sure if I have told you before who I am (rather than who I was of course 🤣), but I am still Steve Bennett. I would not expect you to remember me of course 53 years later. I was one of those amateurs who turned up at Plainmoor in the evenings every Tuesday and Thursday for training, and played on Saturdays or midweek in whichever team selected for which could be Western League, South Western League, or South Devon League. You of course as an apprentice was not there at those training sessions and turning up at nearly lunch time with the professionals and going home before the school next door had kicked out for the day, so you missed those cold winter midweek evenings! 😉 I mostly played at what used to be called right back, although in those 3 games against Argyle I played left back as I was reasonably comfortable either side. Yes I agree with you although we lost in the end after 3 games it was quite an achievement holding them that far and really we should have won the first two games. Argyle had one full time pro Mike Dowling and all of the rest were apprentices, while we had 2 apprentices you and Phil Sandercock, with the rest of the team being amateur players (although that may have given us an advantage as all of the games were November evening games and we were used to the cold winter evenings! 😂). Couple of things that may jog your memory although don't worry if it doesn't as you were still at Plainmoor as an apprentice when I left that particular scene to join Brixham United and our paths have never crossed since. Early October 1969 we both sat on the bench at Weymouth with trainer Don Mills sitting between us. A 1-1 draw and we had a decent team out with John Benson, Alan Welsh, Tony Scott, and Allan Young. Only one sub in those days and I was the sub. You were injured but had travelled as I think your father was the Weymouth manager at the time. It was of course Weymouth reserves as it was ours. Your injury could not have been too bad as the following week at home to Glastonbury you crossed the ball for Rod Webber to score the first goal and I crossed the ball for Alan Welsh to score the second goal in a 2-0 win against the eventual champions. Nothing yet? 🤣 One more try then! At the start of the following season we played a pre-season friendly at Bodmin. We had no coach for economy reasons so took cars. We had a young team and I was one of the few with a full driving licence. I drove Don Mills car which he had only just purchased, and Don drove Allan Brown the managers car. The reason your memory may be jogged is my passengers were you and Phil Sandercock. You were both learning to drive at the time so inevitably all being around the same age you both constantly took the piss out of my driving. We had to divert via Chagford to pick up Rod Webber. 2-0 down half time we won 3-2, and as Rod Webber scored the last minute winner I agreed to drop him off at Chagford on the way back. 😉 We managed to get back in time for a first team 7.30 kick off Division 3 (League 1) game at Plainmoor, although I haven't got a clue who it was against or if we won or lost. Unlike today it was more likely to be a win! ⚽️ I remember you as a thoroughly decent chap although I did get the impression you were not completely happy there in that role. I am slightly older than you 70 now. Just back from a week of driving a 65 feet long narrowboat on the Grand Union Canal, so also having a glass or two of wine whilst looking at photos. Mostly seem to be in the canal side pubs as there is a degree of difficulty in trying to take a photo when trying to squeeze a long beast of a boat under a bridge with only a couple of feet either side. Stress! Much more difficult than playing soccer, although much more enjoyable too! 😂 Sorry it is a bit long winded. Didn't intend that at the start but you know what it is like at our age ... when one starts! I blame the wine ... and don't worry if you still have no memory whatsoever of me, it was good memories for me and it was a pleasure to have played with you a few times. 🥂

When I get the time, I will share with you how the press reported this game. Thanks Jon it was nice to hear from Stuart and we exchanged PM's as well. He came up with some very interesting stuff going on at the club at the time, though of course that would be for him to post on an open forum if he felt he wanted to! Can't remember a press report of the Bodmin game but would be interested to see it when you have more time. Would also be interested to be reminded who the first team were playing in the evening kick off when we got back from Bodmin. I said a division 3 game in my post but being early season I suppose it could have been League Cup. ⚽️
