I don’t pay much attention to the local football scene really so it sometimes takes me by surprise when I see the state of where teams I remember being big names locally are floundering.
A town the size of Torquay, you’d think would have a couple of teams playing at a decent level but after Torquay United, I was surprised that you had to drop down as far as the Premier Division of the South Devon League to find the next highest rank Torquay-based team, in Waldron Athletic who are distinctly mid table. They are only the only Torquay team playing even at that level. What happened to Upton and Hele Rovers etc?
Drop down to Division 1 and you’ll find 4 teams from Torquay: Torquay Town, Babbacombe Corinthians (pleased to see they’re still going as I played a few games for them in the 80s after switching from Babbacombe Rangers), Upton Athletic and Barton Athletic. Based on early season form, it would look like two from Babbacombe, Upton and Barton could go down and diminish Torquay’s football stock even further.
What has happened to Upton Athletic? Have they finally run out of Bastows?
Watcombe Wanderers are in Division 2 and I’m not sure if they even qualify as Torquay-based if they still play in Milber or wherever it is? I was surprised to see them in Division 2 as they were all-conquering at one stage but perhaps they suffered from the Steve Breed effect in the way TUFC did? Who knows? 🤣
And that’s it apart from a few reserve teams. It would seem they are only 6 football clubs other than Torquay United in the town of Torquay, unless I’ve missed something obvious and glaring.
