That's an interesting comment made by Mike Bateson in his notes that is just as relevant today than then, if not more so: "I am often asked if my shares in the club are still up for sale. The answer is yes but with some reservations! There are too many sharp characters around who are looking to make a quick quid and I’d hate to see it all go down the drain just to line the pockets of some property developer. It’s for this reason that I am no longer rushing to buy the freehold; I’ve now come to the conclusion that it's marginally safer in the hands of the council."Plus ca change...

I saw that too and fully agree other than the word "marginally"!!! I had not realised that MB had finally reached this conclusion but pleased that he did. Chris Roberts would have taken out loans secured against the freehold which would have been called in leading to the freehold land being sold off to pay creditors. It was Pete Masters' grand plan to connive with Gordon Oliver to put the freehold into play (surprisingly agreed to by Dave Phillips) that stirred the pot again and attracted the attention of a few "sharp characters". I hope that Oliver leaving the scene takes this off the table for the time being, but you can never rest on your laurels.

Agreed - I hadn’t remembered that MB had come to this conclusion, especially as I remember getting some grief on the original Mervo site from some of the MB sycophants for suggesting I felt the freehold was better with the council than the club when MB at the time was pressing for it. I found myself thinking today about whether a Phoenix club would be allowed to play at Plainmoor should the current TUFC demise - how would it work? Does the current club own the stands? What would happen if a GI-owned TUFC disappeared? Would it be so straightforward that a phoenix club could just take on the stadium?
