Hopefully this game will be on today after a heck of a lot of rain overnight and continuing as I write. However, should be mainly dry this morning with a bit more rain to come this afternoon so watch this space. With only four wins so far this is a rare opportunity for a league double but the bottom line is that to get out of trouble we need wins and crucially at home with incredibly only one in front of the home crowd so far this season. There have been new signings this week with Aguiar coming in from Swindon to strengthen our midfield and Crole, a young striker from Cardiff who can hopefully make an immediate impact as long as his international clearance has come through. May mean Goodwin hasn’t renewed his loan and returned to Stoke City though and with Ellis also returning to his parent club following injury it does feel like two steps forward and two steps back. I would imagine Halifax will be after some serious revenge after kicking us off the pitch at their place, and then ending up like Norway! 🇳🇴
What is happening at Plainmoor is still a complete mystery, and must be up there with the Marie Celeste! No one seems to give a Rats Arse to our present predicament, and just stroll around without a care in the world!
A couple of new players ready to fight their way into the first team, but because we haven’t won a home game since the Old Queen died (Victoria) they might just get a start…fat chance! 🙄

Guess so with Evans and Aguilar playing off Jarvis. No sign of Goodwin or Wearne. Gone for good? Andrews left out or injured? At least we have two attacking options on the bench. My prediction? We will be easily the better team, but contrive to lose. Unlucky, ref's fault, blah blah blah.

Is McGavin injured? Had a good game on Boxing Day and hasn’t been in the squad since.

Jarvis too isolated. Hope to see De Silva and Crole for a good thirty minutes.

Finally I have witnessed a win this season! It was another hard working performance but badly lacked clear chances. Often the final ball was not good and neither keeper was tested much. The difference today in my opinion was having a couple of decent players to turn to on the bench. De Silva came on with 20 minutes to go and immediately his pace and skill against a tiring opposition on a heavy pitch swung the game in Torquay's favour. Suddenly Halifax were back pedaling and had something different to worry about. Clear chances started to come as Torquay found an extra gear and a few minutes later Hall bundled in the all important winner from close range.
The weather was all over the place during the game - some torrential rain, sometimes a strong wind blowing against Torquay in the second half. The pitch was heavy but these days the pitch copes very well with a lot of rain. The area off the pitch where the linesman runs up and down was a right squelchy bog and you half expected him to lose his footing. Torquay had the bulk of the game but rarely troubled their keeper. The most exciting moment in the first half was when Jarvis after around 10 minutes got brought down and the referee seemed to point to the spot. However, Jarvis was pulled up for offside instead. It was a shame as it was a well worked move.
I thought our back 3 of Moxey, Omar and Donnellan looked solid today and I don't think we really missed Ellis. Omar looks refreshed again and Donnellan has progressed to one of our best players. Jarvis worked hard and ran the channels and put himself about but did not have any chances of note. Lapsie and Hall did well in midfield and both lasted the entire game injury free. Hall confirmed that he can still be a match winner and Lapsie was his normal tenacious self getting stuck in. Crowe sometimes offered something going forward. Evans looks good on the ball but often does not have an end product. Our new loan player Aguiar from Swindon looks skillful and hopefully more will come from him in the following weeks. Last word to Halstead who was solid all game and had to make a couple decent saves.
Torquay held out quite comfortably to win 1-0 as Halifax offered very little all game. There were no fist pumps from Gary Johnson after the match, he did applaud the fans. There were boos from the Pop Side that I believe were aimed at Gary Johnson so it seems his popularity is waning. I guess it didn't help with his post match comments about the fans after the Yeovil defeat and if we had lost today I think the fans would have turned on him. The most popular chant today was for Dillon De Silva urging Johnson to bring him on. That proved to be our trump card today.

A much needed win in a game we just about edged but where previously in similar situations this season we have gone on to either draw or lose with last Sunday at Yeovil being a case in point! Very difficult conditions at times and with most of the play seemingly in the mud bath areas directly in front of Bristows bench. The referee gave Lapslie a yellow card in the first half after just clipping the opposing player but didn’t like his out of control sliding tackle but it then made a rod for his own back with plenty of yellows having to then be given for any similar challenges.
I was quite surprised that there were not more shots and chances in these difficult greasey conditions with Halifax surprisingly offering very little threat with Donnellan blocking their best chance from a narrow angled shot. Our goal came after a nice period of pressure following a corner where Crowe forced a rare save from their keeper with a full blooded shot. Moxey retrieved the corner and his cross was headed back into the 6 yard box where Hall was able to bundle home from close range. Our form has been such that I was expecting an equaliser at some point so it was a pleasant surprise when the referees whistle blew his final whistle without too much stress as the players saw out the game for once.

I was listening to the matchon Devon radio in Thailand as usual and am ashamed to admit, I turned it off and went to sleep with 10 minutes to go - the suspense was just too much. Chuffed to see the result this morning and well done the Gulls.
Much more of the same is needed of course but it can be done, indubitably
