Julian has recently passed away.
Locals of an age will remember him as being Mr Torquay Hungarians as he founded and ran the club for some years in the 60's and 70's.
He escaped from Hungary during the 1956 Uprising against Soviet communism as I think, a sixteen year old and made it with a number of other refugees to our shores. He was a goalkeeper from the Andy Donnelly mould as he wasn't too tall and he actually had a successful trial at Dundee (I think United) but decided on a more stable job down here. He then worked at Centrax for a number of years as an engineering lathe turner in their Equipment Division machining the large circular body castings for their gas turbines and it was there that I met him as my Dad, who also worked there, got me a holiday job in the same part of the factory for three successive summers from 1968.
I got to know him well during this period but, after that interlude, my ultimate career meant that our paths diverged. I will, however, always remember Julian as a true gentleman who had time to talk with a spotty teenager!
For those who may also have known him his funeral is at the St Marychurch catholic church of Our Lady Help of Christians and St Denis on Tuesday 26th. September at 12.30.
Rest in peace Julian.
