link - the dreaded ACL injury is very much on the increase in the women’s game and you have only got to look at our national team with the absence of Leah Williamson and Beth Mead at the recent World Cup to see that this impacts all the way through the game with our very own Torquay side suffering 3 such injuries in the last few months. It may be that the growth and professionalism in the game has outstripped the much needed lifetime of strengthening and conditioning that the men get from an early age with another factor possibly being the design of the football boot which many women find uncomfortable. Urgent work and research needs to be undertaken to mitigate this risk which at present is not acceptable and could hold the growth of the women’s game back. Torquay United manager, Steve Elwood talks about this below as the FA looks to continue to raise awareness and find solutions.
