Everybody knows that we lost to Farnborough in the FA cup in 1991. How many know that teams from Torquay and Farnborough faced each other in a Cup tie as long ago as 1907? The semi final of the East Devon Senior Cup to be precise. A team from Farnborough in the East Devon Senior Cup? Has Jon finally lost the plot? After Ellacombe thrashed Torquay United 4-0 at Plainmoor in the quarter final, they were drawn to play the 110th Battery of the Royal Field Artillery in the semis. Before the semis were played, the brigade was moved from Topsham to Farnborough. Ellacombe hoped to get a bye to the final, but the Battery travelled down to the County Ground, Exeter and thrashed them 5-1.

Deep Cut Barracks. Brings back a few memories been there several times! I love the style of old newspaper sports reports although it seems nothing much has changed in local reporting in the last 100+ years as the reporter was clearly not at the game and is writing his report from hearsay! Nice to see the Bastow family had already started their involvement in Torbay football before becoming most of the successful Upton Athletic team! 😉⚽️

Geography of the area has changed since those days. I wouldn’t classify Deepcut as Farnborough these days as the newspaper does. Not even in the same County for one. Although not far away, mind.
