I have been fortunate enough to get this programme. It's a bit battered but as far as I am aware this is the earliest known issue of a Torquay United programme. If I get chance I will post some photos of it. It was for the Devon Senior Cup Round 2. The team 1 to 11 was Gartrell, Bovey, Mortimer, Davis, Pratt, Counter, Burch, Pyne, Nettlesonne, Townsend and Lincoln. I don't know the attendance or result. Chudleigh won through against Newton at the third attempt to play us. Also I am not sure whether Athletic was added to Chudleigh afterwards or Torquay United didn't bother to add it. Printers were C.G. Jowitt of St. Marychurch and it cost 1d. The programme stated 'Next week's match - Devon County'.

Well done Sam and here as a bit of useless information.........
......I remember Jowitt's had a shop in Fore Street St Marychurch nicely placed with pubs (the Manor and the Dolphin) at either side just a few doors away. According to the Pictorial and Historical Survey of Babbacombe and St Marychurch they bought the premises from Bendles (another local printer) in 1916.

Jowitt of 26 Fore Street still holds £10 of shares in Torquay United AFC Limited.

Nice to forget the trials and tribulations of 2024 and the possibility that we will have no football club next season. Much nicer to wallow in 1921. Must get round to writing up the full fascinating story of that season's Devon Senior Cup. Torquay 4-0 up at half-time against Chudleigh and strolled the second half to end up 5-0 winners. Goals from Tommy Townsend, Crad Evans, Pyne and two from Freddie Burch (one a penalty and one via the Chudleigh keeper's head). Chudleigh Athletic not formed until 1926, so ths was against plain Chudleigh AFC. Not to be confused with Chudleigh Knighton who were entertaining our third team (the recently-merged Toruqay Town first team) on the same day and beating them 2-0. Harold Counter did not play due to injury and Charles Lincoln possibly did not either - although contradictory information on this. Clarence Bovey moved to half-back with Jack Biddick replacing him at full back (probably). Tommy Townsend moving out to the left wing with Crad Evans coming in at inside forward (probably). Quite a few players played out of position in an experimental lineup. Gateman has already commented on the programme printer. The following Saturday's game against Devon County was won 2-1 (Townsend and Burch scoring) with United eyeing up future signings Charles Ball and Fred Rice in the Devon team. Pen pics of some of United's team here: torquayfansforum.co.uk/thread/13410/torquay-united-incorporated-26th-july?page=2

Interesting re pricing that sitting in the posh seats was three and a half times the price of standing on the Pop!

I'll try and get it onto the thread, not quite sure how to do it. Thanks Jon and Andrew for great info. I suppose it could be the first season of programme production seeing 1921/22 was first pro season (is this right Jon). Absolutely love the club history, I wish there was a South Devon football history museum to stop all this heritage getting lost. Andy, Gaffer sends his regards.

Sam, would love to see this and the 1924 reserve team programme. You need to upload scans to IMGUR or a similar site and copy and paste here the share link. If you don’t fancy doing that, please email scans to me and I will do it. This was the first ever season of the new Torquay United club, so almost certainly the first season you would find Torquay United programmes. Not sure whether Torquay Town issued programmes or not. I guess they would have done for cup games, but not so sure about league games. When you open your South Devon Football Museum, give us a job! TUST is looking into funding for a TUFC history project, but I guess that will depend on whether the new owners have any interest whatsoever in the club’s heritage. Cannot really see how it could be possible if you had someone like George Edwards in charge.

Wow, a real find and gives us an insight not just into the club at this very early stage, but life in Torquay at this time with three digit telephone numbers and being able to enter a Whist Drive with Christmas cakes and poultry being the prizes on offer. Brings back happy childhood memories of my sister and I playing whist against my grandparents and regularly beating them! Who knows, maybe a 1920s themed night out could be held at Plainmoor!
