This forum is blessed with members who really know their history where TUFC is concerned. Many great history threads have appeared on the forum and I have decided it would be great to keep all the history threads in one place.
Jon and Barton Down have been given the powers to run this new board and I hope they will identify all suitable threads on the forum that can be moved into the Tufc History Room.
This has been created in response to a post made by aussie and one I thought was a great Idea.

Good idea, Dave, and I see you've made an excellent start in moving things across. Thanks to Aussie as well for making the suggestion in the first place. It's nice to know that some of material that has been posted has been so appreciated.
I might have some material for later in the day....

If you do find any other threads Barton that you think should be on this board then please just paste the link for me and I will move them over.

So good to read that Darryl thinks our history room is the best part of a very good site overall and as I said in my opening post, we are so blessed to have the great knowledge of both Jon and Barton Downs on the forum along with Merse and may others.
Anything that is pre 2000 can be put in this board, maybe you played for our youth team before this year and have some memories you would like to share with us.
maybe you can remember a really great game from the past and can recall the match for us to enjoy, please feel free to add anything you remember from the past, you are sure to receive replies from our history men.

As an idea Dave (and Jon... and Barton.... and Aussie)... and because i'd like to add some of my own programmes from the past... would it not be an idea to now have a sub-folder for these progs? It just seems they may start to swamp the History frontpage, and it would give Timbo something further to do... get them in date order as to when the game was played!

That sound's good idea, I will have a chat with Jon and Barton later, it would have to be a sub board like others we have on the forum.

On refection, it may be better to combine the forum help board with the forum information board, move the TUST board there( I prefer to keep just four boards in each category on the front page) and make a new board for the The Torquay Untied boards category just for all the programmes.

a massive defeat for paulton rovers in the f.a. cup v norwich 1-7.
not quite as big as torquay united reserves inflicted on poor old paulton in i believe the 1955-56 season.
the scoreline being 16-0 played in the western league, possibly torquays biggest score in their history. not even sure if it was home or away.
i recall harold dobbie, then a veteran centre forward getting a hatful, possibly 6 or 7.

Our record win is probably 23-0, but I’m still unable to confirm that 100% - see the discussion here: torquayfansforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=tufchistory&action=display&thread=1845I’ve had a look through Timbo’s programmes (in the nice new programme room – well done Dave, Timbo and Leigh for the idea). The home game with Paulton was scheduled for 31 March 1956 according to the fixtures listed here: torquayfansforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=programmes&action=display&thread=3271I wonder if Timbo has a programme from April 1956 which would confirm the actual date and the scoreline? As you can see, we had won 3-1 away at Paulton and had already struck double figures twice by the end of December – 10-0 wins at home to Radstock and away to Barton’s favourites Peasedown Miners' Welfare. The reason that the reserves were banging so many goals in during 1955/56 was that they were playing in the second division of the Western League. As recently as 1951, they had been been playing the likes of Hereford and Yeovil in the Southern League. In 1951, they were founder members of the South Western League but after four seasons decided to move to the Western League – but were made to start from the bottom in the second division. The title was won with 135 goals scored in 38 games – Taunton Town were runners-up. The reserves then spent 17 seasons in the top (later only) divison of the Western League before the reserve team was scrapped as part of the desperate economy measures of 1973. If anyone is interested in old tables for the Western League, they are all here: www.rsssf.com/tablese/engwesternhist.html

That is the most amazing thing I have read on this forum.... Stewart not only remembering a game from over fifty years ago but recalling the opposition's tactics & the way the players were deployed! Quite Remarkable.... Well said, Budleigh, and postings such as Stewart's really add another dimension to the History Room. And, likewise, I'm always amazed by how some people are capable of recalling all sorts of incidents - rather than just the odd one - from games of many years ago. I've an old school friend - now a Chelsea season ticket holder who has lived in London for thirty-odd years - who'll give you chapter and verse concerning virtually every goal scored at Plainmoor 35/40 years ago. As you say: quite remarkable! And, just as we enjoy stories from years ago, we also appear to lap up old programmes. A debt of gratitude to all who have contributed programmes in recent weeks, especially now we're finding little gems not just from the 1940 and 1950s but also from the 1930s. Superb stuff. On a broader note, I'm sure it would be easy to occasionally see the History Room as the preserve of people who live in the past and think that football - and life in general - was once automatically better than it is now. Happily, I don't think that's the case here as the majority of people who post take the healthy view that things are not necessarily better nor worse but merely different and, in some instances, remarkably similar (although I tend to adhere to the overall view that football and society has progressed). I rather think we do well with our balanced approach which is neither mawkish nor sentimental. But sometimes you can't help wondering about certain periods and I, like a few others, especially love the stuff between 1945 and 1970. Equally, I relish the chance of seeing material from the 1920s and 1930s. But, if the 1980s and 1990s fascinate you the most, please don't hold back. We'd welcome items and memories from that period as well. Thanks in advance for your continuing contributions.
