Another thread recalls our 4-0 victory against Leeds in 1955. The visitors were skippered that day by the legendary John Charles who was paying the first of several visits to Plainmoor. This picture shows Don Mills and John Charles at the start of the match: To the best of my knowledge Il Gigante Buono's next visit to Plainmoor was as player-manager of Hereford for a FA Cup replay in 1968, a game refereed by a certain Mr Clive Thomas of Treorchy. The match details come from Soccer Star magazine. Now, is this my imagination, but did John Charles play in a rather bizarre game at Plainmoor in 1976? This was between a Jimmy Hill XI and the Saudi Arabian national team. I have a memory of a rather portly Gentle Giant appearing that Sunday afternoon: Lastly a couple of souvenirs from a John Charles exhibition I chanced upon in Wrexham museum when we were playing at the Racecourse a few years ago:

I've had this at home for a number of years. I've been told that Eric was a friend of my Grandad's. I didn't know if there was any significance to this particular tie until this thread, but as he scored in the first match....! 08/01/1955 FACR3 Elland Road Leeds 2 - 2 Torquay United 28,150 Charles, Kerfoot I suppose if you were to give your modern footballer a trinket like that you would probably having it holding his toothbrush and razor. ;D

Rattz, just looked up Eric Kerfoot's details. Born Ashton-under-Lyne 1924, died 1980. Over 300 league games for Leeds who he joined from Stalybridge Celtic. Later played for Chesterfield.

I only came across the tankard a couple of years ago, and seeing how my Grandad died just 2 years after Eric, I'll never know the story of why we ended up with it. My Grandad lived in Dukinfield, not more than a couple of miles from A-U-L and all the info Barton's posted seems to check out with what I had. Thanks for the information guys.

It's the Jimmy Hill charity game - and not a Hereford United friendly - but here's John Charles (aged 44) at Plainmoor on his last playing visit:
