its time to leave Sunny Devon for the Arctic wilderness of the North, last weeks experience of that bitingly cold wind has ensured i have packed my sunglasses and my thermals. In my experience, there's nowhere that regularly "welcomes" us with a bit of hail, sleet or snow than Field Mill.....................I've been going there for the past forty years and it's rarely been any different, and I've actually watched games from all four sides/ends of the ground! Cut into a hillside on the site of an old quarry, I reckon the highest land to the East (where the wind invariably blows from in those parts) must be in the Urals; hence the exposed nature of the place. What other ground (apart from Sixfields) has a nice duck pond just across the road in which to deposit the ref? Who of those who remember the old two tier grandstand at the ground realise that it in fact began life at East Molesey's Hurst Park Racecourse and was purchased from there on the course's closure in the sixties? Highlights over the years include watching the game with Paul Gibbs just after he had signed for Argyle, (once a Gull, always a Gull for Gibbo) TB1 explaining his wife's accompanying us one particular year on the basis that she had expressed a wish to "go shopping in Mansfield" and waking up one morning following a Friday night match in a motel bed with a statuesque and leopard skin underwear clad young (ish) lady ....................actually, THAT was the highlight ~ bugger the rest! ;D

Two "interesting" facts:
Our last two wins at Mansfield were in 1983 and 1996. The optimist would say we are in the habit of winning there once every thirteen years.
We have had two "lost" league games with Mansfield. A 2-2 draw at Plainmoor on 2 September 1939 was wiped from the records by the War. The match at Plainmoor on 25 January 1997 was abandoned due to fog. As far as I know, the only other abandoned league game at Plainmoor was against Shrewsbury in 1971. Does anybody know of any others?

Wasn't Lincoln City abandoned due to fog around Christmas time in the early 90's followed by a posponement a year or two after?

Wasn't Lincoln City abandoned due to fog around Christmas time in the early 90's followed by a posponement a year or two after? Was it? I don't remember that one. Can anyone else confirm? I know lots of games were called off in the late 80s / early 90s, sometimes at very short notice. One was because a tree fell down on the Pop I think. What I am looking for is matches that actually kicked off and were then halted, rather than games that never started.

I remember Lincoln having to come down 2 seasons on the trot for games which we not played. I'm sure the 1st was abandoned as I remember it as the only time I have left with a voucher. The second was postponed before the game at short notice.
You could be right though Jon as I'm a bit hazy about the first match as it could well have been called of literally minutes before KO, but deffo left with the voucher for the re-arranged game

I'm of to sit out in the sun to listen on the radio

Christie in the squad ahead of Green? Wierd choice. Hodges still at centre half is also a debatable option with Ellis on the bench - I appreciate he has done a decent job there but gives away so many free kick... which can be key in games as tight as this

Is Thompson injured? He was pretty good in the home game against Barrow, but hasn't featured since?

....sounds like the 1st half is going to tick by slowly.
You can hear that wind howling like a good 'un over the airwaves..

Pikeygull, it could have been a voucher you received for the Stockport game on the Friday night back in 1991 - it was called-off just before kick-off after a deluge at the last minute. Lincoln was also called-off at the last minute due to rain (I think on the day of the Grand Natonal that was abandoned) and SHOULD perhaps have been abandoned in the 90/91 season when they were one of two teams to win at Plainmoor (I think?) in terrible fog!
Sounds like very blustery conditions up at Field Mill today - that might be a big influence in this game.....

We obviously 'softened' Grays up ahead of todays game. Our fixture was the equivalent of someone loosening the lid of a jar before someone else takes the glory of opening it.

damn....
Bevan a bit at fault from the sound of it, you sensed it was coming though.
Crucial to not concede another before HT
