Guilty? Moi? Nah, I was actually in Merse's little group at the time and must admit I didn't see the incident happen. Merci "Arsene"! Seeing as TB1 lost his jacket in there last season they'll probably be holding a jumble sale shortly when some of you lot can go and purchase your usual standard of attire!

Can't really add to Andy's report as I saw the game the same way, albeit that Carlisle's work-rate and invention swung my man of the match vote. Wroe's performance after the sending-off was that of two men, he was everywhere. The link up play with Carlisle for the chance he would have done better to square to Sills was breathtaking stuff. Unlike others, I thought Toddy was all over their centre-half for the disallowed goal, but the chances were there for both sides today - the only additional one I would mention was a free header for Greavsie which he put over in hurried fashion as unbeknownst to him he was unmarked on the edge of their six-yard box. All in all, it was probably the best 0-0 I've ever been to. I called it as a "must not lose" previously and lose we did not. With others dropping two points around us it's as you were but with one game less to go. Anyone up for a driveshare to Barrow? news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/8006424.stm

Due to having some must do today things, I have not been home and therefore not on the forum, I did get to use a PC at 6.30pm and thought what the hell is going on ;D nothing on the match thread.
Just as I should never doubt the fact that our club wants nothing more than to win promotion, I should never doubt this forum or its members. Some really great match reports that were a joy to read when I got on tonight, so thanks for taking the time to write them.
I was able to listen to the game on the radio and I do try and put my thoughts up before the match reports from those who were at the game, today its the other way around.
It was a good game to listen too for sure, maybe due to the commentators being much more upbeat, there are times when you listen to a game they just sound so depressing about everything and it ruins it for me.
Dave Thomas talked often during the first half about Carlisle and the impact he was having on the game, while it sounded like Dsane was not really in the game in the first half. I see we have some different views on Toddy, he sure got loads of praise for a goal saving header near the end of the match, but many times DT went on about the defense getting caught out far to easily.
The game sounded exciting and end to end at times and chances were created by both teams and as Andy said the ball would not go in the net. DT felt that Mansells first booking should not have happened, did not think it was worthy of a yellow card.
Robertson came across as having a great game and Bevan who was not so confident in his handling in our last game sounded very solid again today.
I will just pick up on one point Andy made, yes the fans today came over on the radio loud and clear and really made it a great atmosphere just listening, but that was also the case at the last home game. I have read many away reports on here where some away fans have shouted out things they should not have, much like has happened at home games.
While three points would have been good and may well have been deserved the point makes sure things remain in our own hands. It would have been a different matter if we had got beaten, so now it will be a matter of getting a win against Barrow.
I think that is a must because Burton now will be coming to us and while a draw would do for them, I can only see them wanting to win the game.
Winning on Tuesday may just make the last game of the season more bearable, I would hate to have too much hanging on the result of the Burton game, not sure my nerves could take another end of season shoot out.
Today was a good day at the office and praise must go to the players, Bucks and all the great fans who went today who were the 10th man after Mansell got sent off, a big well done.

I see we have some different views on Toddy, he sure got loads of praise for a goal saving header near the end of the match, but many times DT went on about the defense getting caught out far to easily. There is an on going debate about the rights and wrongs of Liverpool's preference for "zonal defending" rather than "man for man" which is the preferred and generally more used system in football. About how "zonal" can cause all sorts of problems when decisions of just who picks up who need to be made, but how "man for man" simplifies that process but has a tendency to allow a defence to get pulled around if the players to be marked operate a constantly changing positional policy. This is where Stevenage are so hard to play against in my opinion. Both Morison and Boylan are not only strikers of repute but they are highly mobile and interchangeable and the other (rather unique in the BSP) factor we had to deal with yesterday was that when gong forward, they push up their wide midfielders and fullbacks to effectively operate at 2-4-4.Thus, I think; ANY central defence would have (and ours probably did) find it extremely challenging to sort out their line whilst keeping shape..................but by hook or by crook OUR lads managed that yesterday and generally kept their line so high up they kept Stevenage to efforts from distance rather than close in. I would say that the basic difference between Carlisle and Dsane is that whilst Carlisle takes naturally to "wing play" Dsane does not, but what Dsane offers over (say) Stevens and Caryol is his discipline in tucking in and holding the midfield four to a tight unit (as does Carlisle) when we are not in possession which the younger two players ~ who obviously offer more going forward; do not do in this stage of their development................although I must say it is slowly becoming more apparent from them as time goes on. So I would agree that Carlisle looked far more "silky" and willing to get at his fullback when the opportunity arose yesterday, but I wouldn't let that distract from Dsane's performance. Having just read Greavsie's blog from the early hours of this morning, we have to acknowledge that pre-match preparation does not always go to plan and the man deserves great praise not only for turning out at all yesterday but for the very fact that (apart from noticing his prodigious intake of fluids in the second half) there was not an iota of suggestion all was not well with him during that terrific show of commitment and leadership.

.......................I might add also, that it was so typical of Bucks' positive mentality yesterday that he replaced Dsane with Caryol for the last quarter leaving Stevenage with conundrum of "do we keep pushing forward or do we sit back a bit more to contain Caryol?"................they sat back a bit in my opinion, and thus the pressure of incessant attacking of our back line was somewhat relieved. A fascinating contest yesterday, between two rather good young managers in my opinion. England "C" manager Paul Fairclough was sat just along from me, I wonder what he made of the tactical battle of wits and which players particularly caught his eye during the game?

Ditto, ditto, ditto from me about yesterday's game which was an old-fashioned "good contest" between two decent teams playing well. Stevenage had the chances but - in that way which is hard to explain - I had the feeling, from soon after half-time, that they weren't going to score. If we are to play Stevenage again this season it'll be a fascinating tactical battle and a game worth seeing whoever you are. I just hope our ascendancy over them is destined to be maintained.
The point made about us continuing to push forward after the sending off - both in the period before Lee Hodges came on and afterwards - has been well put. As for Lee Mansell's sending-off, my eyes aren't good enough for me to pass judgement from afar - and that inflatable whatever-it-was might have been flying around further impairing my vision - although I always shudder when a robust challenge is made so soon after a booking.
As is often the case I wish I'd seen those two challenges, and some other key incidents, from much closer. Indeed it was one of those games when, for a while, I wasn't sure if I should have sat in the main stand or with our fans. I knew the backing would be loud - largely because the acoustics are so good in that stand - and, in fact, it was noisy from twenty minutes before the game (which is unusual in football these days). I feared a poor performance would quickly change the mood to the other extreme but, of course, that wasn't the case and there was a fine positivity about the whole afternoon. Ultimately I was pleased I chose to sit behind the goal tucked away where I may have been mistaken for minding the array of flags (including the good old Capital Gulls banner which I've not seen for a while).
After all the tomfoolery of 1996 Broadhall Way is now a tidy little ground which I've enjoyed visiting on both occasions. Add a few pine trees and it would have a definite Scandinavian feel. As for Stevenage itself, I fear last year's visit to the central shopping centre was enough for my lifetime. However I do like the Great North Road atmosphere of Old Stevenage and overall - although it's easy to knock the places - I'd still maintain the establishment of the 1940s new towns was a tremendous achievement so soon after the war. Not that the locals in the then small Herftordshire town of Stevenage welcomed the idea for, back in 1947, they renamed the railway station Silkingrad in "honour" of Lewis Silkin, the town and country planning minister.

Even Merse was smiling at the end, even though someone nicked his 'titfer' in the Stevenage social club before the game. Ring Crimestoppers on 0800 NO-ONE KNOWS if you have any more information about this heinous crime against society (and that's just the hat!!!) Yes, says it all about the intellect of some gobshite doesn't it. When it was swiped off my head from behind I treated the childishness with the contempt it deserved and didn't bother to turn and remonstrate not wanting to give them the pleasure they obviously craved from being so stupid. Whether it was a Torquay fan or a Stevenage one, matters not really. It's just a sad reflection on the type of moron one has to mix with to enjoy the beautiful game and indicative of the narrow mindedness and bigoted nature of the person who did it. I had a Gucci shirt, a five hundred pound watch and a one hundred pound pair of shoes on you could have had too if your so bloody unemployable you need to steal for a living...............arsehole! I saw a Jack Russell with a hat in it's mouth leg it past me and Yorkgull towards the local TK MaXX. They must home like pigeons.
