Sad to report that former Gulls striker Jack Swindells who arrived on a free transfer from Manchester City in the early sixties has died at the age of 72 in the Manchester area. He left Plainmoor on another free in the summer of 1965 and joined Altrincham ~ then of the Cheshire County League which was the premier Northern "non league" of it's time featuring such clubs as Wigan Athletic ~ and hit an amazing 82 goals from 63 appearances! Needless to say he became a legend at Alty altogether he scored some 265 times in 317 appearances. No doubt jon will enlarge on his United career, although I do remember him as yet another unfortunate who the Popside never really took to.

From www.neilbrown.newcastlefans.com/player/jackswindells.htmJACK SWINDELLS Born: Manchester d.o.b: 12 April 1937 Position: Inside Forward Teams Seasons Apps. Gls. Source : Manchester City (Am.) Blackburn Rovers 57-60 9 1 Accrington Stanley 59-61 65 28 Barnsley 61-62 14 8 Workington 61-63 61 19 Torquay United 63-64 18 6 Newport County 64-65 23 3 to Altrincham Totals 190 65 Bit before my time - just! - so I'll make no claim to remember him at Plainmoor. More a case of reading about his Altrincham exploits in the small print of countless editions of Soccer Star. I guess he was at Altrincham when Peter Swales was running the shop and making a name for himself.
