It's always a surprise when you look at this list of Torquay United managers - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torquay_United_F.C.#Managers - and you see the name of Jimmy Hargreaves who was "in charge" for a couple of games in 1984 between the departure of Bruce Rioch and the arrival of Dave Webb. Does anybody have any memories of this episode? The centenary history says Hargreaves had been our Youth Development Officer (as they were known in those days). I think he may have been from Plymouth - possibly Cornwall? - and went on manage clubs such as Liskeard, Falmouth and Barnstaple. Then look down that Wiki and you'll see names such as John Sims and John Cornforth....

I remember well when Bruce Rioch left, at that time you could go and watch the team train at what was Audley Park school. The Dude was always there and always great to talk with.

Jimmy Hargreaves, does not ring any bells with me, surly merse or Jon will know. Jim was a very good youth player at Argyle who did not develope into a full time professional and combined his day time work with coaching and managing. He was very successfull at St Blazey and Falmouth Town using a nucleus of Plymouth based lads to win South Western titles there and he also managed Falmouth in the Western League. He also managed the Devon County F.A. teams. When I played a little bit at the start of the Duplex Litho team that caused so much jealousy due to the "ample expenses" they paid for South Devon League Division 6 football, we used to train on Tuesday nights down at HMS Drake in Torpoint under Jimmy and his Western League lads, and we also played a number of Thursday night friendlies with South Western League sides there too. Just as I was leaving the area, Jim was running the youth set up for Bruce Rioch at Plainmoor.....................a nice guy and a very innovative coach in his time.

Jimmy was indeed the Youth Development Officer. I think he must have been around less than a year because we scrapped our youth team in the SWSWYL early in the 1982/83 season as a cost-cutting measure. 1983 was the year that the YTS system was first introduced which paved the way for a proper youth system - funded by the government. Our first batch for the 1983/84 included the great Mark Loram.
It surprised me that Hargreaves held the fort between Rioch and Webb as then General Manager Frank O'Farrell appeared to be the obvious choice.
I was living abroad at the time, so don't really know the thinking behind that at the time. I don't think Frank hung around too long when Webby came Webby came on the scene - maybe he'd made up his mind to leave when Rioch went?
I'll start another thread about whether Hargreaves counts as a manager or not.
