I am after a bit of help/advice, especially from the guys around London or who use the underground a bit.
How long, approximately, would it take from Hounslow to Dagenham on the tube??
The reason i ask is that on the Friday night before the Dagenham game we are staying near Hounslow and have 2 choices to get to Dagenham and then home.
1. Leave car in Hounslow, tube to Dagenham, tube back after the game and drive home to Exeter from there.
2. Drive around to Dagenham and then Drive home from there after the game.
The difference in journey times, according to AA route map, is 40 minutes more from Dagenham, but that doesn't take into account any traffic problems around there on a Saturday afternoon??? Hounslow is near M4 so would be a relatively quick/easy drive home if the tube takes less than 40 minutes??
Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Unless you find the extra special teleport Tube, available only to the lucky few including our wonderful mayor, it will take you over an hour from Hounslow to Dagenham, and I believe there are also some engineering works that day as well. Options from Hounslow (West, Central and East) are Piccadilly Line to Holborn, change to Central Line to Mile End, then District Line to Dagenham East which is closest to the ground, but which I fear is closed that day from a previous Merse posting. (I think there is another thread with regards to ticketing for the game he posted on). Or from Hounslow to Hammersmith, and change to District Line there, which might be a little longer but entails less hassle. And as for the traffic, err, yes, perhaps not the best idea on a Saturday morning, with regards to the M25 and the Lakeside effect. Try Merse on that one as well

I'm leaning towards the Tube as i think I'd rather be stuck on the Tube for an hour rather than on the M25. Although i wont mention lakeside to the girls as its unlikely we would make the game. Got the tickets on Tuesday night so at least that bit is sorted.

Once again thanks. That was a really useful link, it shows that both the Hammersmith & District lines are closed for a long stretch prior to Dagenham on that Saturday meaning bus replacements. It's now looking more likely to be M25 and Lakeside.

I hope you know its all ticket for torquay fans due to work on the away end, unless of course you are ok to go in the home sections . You wont be alone in there as plenty of our capital based fans will be doing that..

I'll be faced with the Whitechapel-Barking bus transfer and might, in the spirit of adventure, seek an alternative from Fenchurch Street for part of the journey. I'll research.

As the Fenchurch Street line runs along the same track bed as the District line, I guess that will be bus replacement too. My advice would be to catch the Liverpool Street - Romford service from either Liverpool Street or Stratford on the Central line and alight at either Chadwell Heath for an £8 taxi (minicab) ride to the ground which will take about ten minutes .................not bad shared amongst four; or carry on to Romford where there is a direct bus to the ground from the station (Stop T, Route 103 - (destination: "Rainham War Memorial") alighting at Rainham Road South (Victoria Road) for the ground on your right.....................scheduled journey time 26 minutes. An Oystercard (Travel Card) for one day will encompass all your journies as long as you state "all zones" when purchasing. If driving from Hounslow I wouldn't use the M25 on a Saturday, allow 90 minutes and follow this route, which will be appreciated by your girls for the tourist value and really is the fastest, most direct and traffic light way. Also, ther is NO Congestion Charging at weekends....................believe me I'm a professional! A4 into Central London as far as the Natural History Museum, turning left onto Exhibition Road and follow until you enter Hyde Park turning immediately right once through the park gates onto South Carriage Drive exiting the park at Hyde Park Corner and taking Constitution Hill down past Buckingham Palace holding the left hand lane at the Queen Victoria Memorial and up The Mall turning right into Horse Guards Road and then left onto Gt George Street holding a straight line accross Parliament Square and turning left immediately before Westminster Bridge onto Victoria Embankment and follow that road as far as Tower Hill picking up signs for "Docklands/City Airport/Tilbury" and take East Smithfield and the Highway through the Limehouse Link Tunnel and directions for the A13/Tilbury all the way East out past Canary Wharf and the fast road out past Canning Town , East Ham , Barking until you get to the A1306 exit s.p. "Dagenham East" then at the second set of lights turn left onto the B178 - Ballards Road then left at The Bull Roundabout to Rainham Road South which leads you to the ground on your left..................plenty of legitimate street parking around there and the only decent place to drink is in the Football Club itself where they will make you very welcome!

MASSIVE thanks for that, i was very nearly going down the M25 route, so I wouldn't have been a happy chappy sat in long queues round there. The directions look precise enough that even a woman can follow them, but i bet we still get lost. ;D Do i need to leave a tip for the info?

National Rail is showing normal service between Fenchurch Street and Barking taking 16/17 minutes at 5-10 minute intervals. The bus replacement is certainly to be avoided because it's stopping at five intermediate stations. Merse's Romford/103 route sounds a decent prospect as shown on the map: I might go for the Fenchurch Street to Dagenham Dock option but it's probably one for the true enthusiast who doesn't object to being scenically-challenged. Don't take it as a recommendation unless you fancy a long walk and nice dollop of social and industrial history. I can't wait... Row E Seat 42 anybody sat close by?
