Tim Sill’s Wembley Football Boots Charity Auction in aid of the Megan Appeal
This auction is being held on behalf of Lewis Starkie and its aim is to raise as much money as possible for the Megan Appeal. The auction consists of the football boots Tim Sill’s wore and scored in during the Wembley BSP Play-off Final on the 17th May 2009 and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Tim himself.
Lewis was the mascot for Torquay United at the Wembley Final.
Lewis was diagnosed on the 19/5/2008 as having Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, since then he has undergone initial chemo treatment at Bristol Children’s Hospital during the months of May and June in 2008.This was followed up by two delayed intensive chemo courses at the RD&E at Exeter; the first one was done in September and October 2008 and the second one January and February 2009.
He is now on a maintenance phase of chemo treatment for the next two and a half years and after that he will be reviewed and decisions taken on the next stage. He has had to have fitted a special device under his armpit to make things better for him to have the chemo treatments.
Shortly after Lewis was diagnosed, Dave Roach, the founder of the Torquay Fans Forum, became aware of Lewis’s condition and suggested to his dad Grahame, that it might be beneficial for Lewis to follow the story of Torquay United’s own Chris
Todd. He himself had not long been diagnosed with Leukaemia and was making great progress in beating the illness. Following on from this, Lewis wanted to be a mascot at a Torquay United game and it turned out to be the same game that 30 Torquay Fans Forum members were having a match day carvery at Plainmoor.
The TFF decided to run an appeal to provide Lewis with his kit for the match. Pledges came in from places as far away as Vancouver and the TFF soon found over £480 had been pledged The TFF were able to provide not only the kit for Lewis, but brand new boots, a tracksuit and treated his mum, dad and sister to the game. This included all entrance fees and also a carvery with the TFF members. The TFF also provided quality frames to house two signed shirts that had been donated by the club and also Boots and Laces. A caricature was draw of Lewis by the talented artist known as Crooky and a drum teacher was provided to give Lewis lessons in his own home.
It was at the Wembley game that Tim Sills decided he wanted Lewis to have his boots and Lewis was over the moon to be offered them. After some consideration Lewis decided that as so much kindness and generosity had been shown to him, he felt he wanted to auction off the boots so money could be raised for a needy cause.
Lewis himself only a few weeks ago ran in a race and raised over £800 for the Clic Sergeant Leukaemia Charity. Lewis and his family have been very touched and moved with the sad story of young four year old Meagan and want to use the money raised to help a fellow family who is having to deal with Leukaemia in a child so young.
Megan, an only child, was diagnosed last December after being unwell for five weeks and began treatment on Christmas Eve. She has an aggressive form of the disease and has only weeks or months to live. She had three lots of chemo. When she didn’t respond they tried her on a trial drug. They were hoping to do a bone marrow transplant and had a perfect match with someone in Canada. Unfortunately it couldn’t go ahead as doctors couldn’t get her cancer into remission. In herself she is really well. She’s as bright as a button and is up and about and enjoying things but tires very easily. She is a really girly girl. She loves dressing up and playing with her dolls and being with other people.
