Jimmy Dunne was on the verge of being called up to play for Ireland. "Jimmy for Ireland" chants rolled from the Mini-Stand. There were observers at Plainmoor for this game to assess Jimmy´s performance against Scunthorpe. Torquay trailed 0-1 at half time. A thick mist decended over Plainmoor, we couldn´t see the Babbacombe End goal from the Mini-Stand. Torquay fought back to win the game 2-1, Jimmy Dunne had an outstanding second half, scored at least one of the goals (possibly both anybody remember?) and seemed to be set for his debut for Ireland. Next day there was a report in the HE that the observers hadnt seem enough of the game due to the mist and had been unable to assess Jimmys performance.

And - if my memory of the Daily Express headline over the match report is correct - Jimmy Dunne may have been at fault for the goal we conceded.
DUNNE ATONES - what does atone mean, Dad?

Football is so educational, isn't it? My entire knowledge of geography comes from football. I reckon you can attribute the terrible decline in Maths standards back to the Football League's decision to replace Goal Average with Goal Difference. They even dumbed down a step further to Goals Scored for a year or two, didn't they?

And here's the classic...to think Cardiff have never been champions! DIVISION ONE 1923/24 1 Huddersfield Town PL 42 PTS 57 (60-33) 2 Cardiff City PL 42 PTS 57 (61-34) * Maths teacher at the knobs' school, Chelston!
