Jon,
reading your comment on the Cardiff v Torquay game 1977 and having a school boy (Maurice Cox) on the bench made me remember Steve Morrall who also played for United and who I knew personally from Torquay Athletic Club. A talented athlete and sportsman, anybody know what became of him. Perhaps you could check that Excel data of yours for his record.

Steve was released in 1977 after racking up 175 appearances and thirteen goals in five seasons.
I believe that part of the reason for his leaving was that he was keen to further his career with the Inland Revenue. Steve played part-time with Yeovil for a few years and I think did got on well in his chosen career as a Tax Inspector.

Memories often play tricks, as Jon has frequently been able to point out. I seem to recall an evening game at Plainmoor wet conditions late in the game and Torquay get a corner on the right at the St Marychurch end. The corner was an outswinger , hit deep towards the left edge of the box where "Beaky" (as he was nicknamed) connected with a screaming volley that flew into the back of the net and I think won the game for us. Merse might recall as he, I think, I was working at the club at that time. I await being corrected

I await being corrected I can't particularly recall this one - but you can narrow it down to these three home games won by a single goal with Morrall getting our last goal. I would have been at all three of these. 31/03/76 H v Southport W 2 - 1 2,014 P Sandercock (pen), Morrall 04/05/77 H v Hartlepool W 1 - 0 1,831 Morrall 07/05/77 H v Halifax Town W 3 - 2 2,476 Dunne, Vassallo, Morrall

By strange coincidence Steve Morrall was mentioned in yesterday's Herald - getting to the final of an over-85s squash tournament in Newton Abbot.
At first, I was a bit shocked to see that he was that old - but then realised it was doubles with combined age over 85.

Steve Morrall was indeed a talented athlete and was national university (UAU) long jump champion in 1971.
