Writing the words about Don O'Riordan today brought back memories of the Irish tour in 1994. A coachload of Torquay United supporters - supplemented by a few drunks many of us had never seen before (were they from the Royal Standard?) set off on the Thursday and took the overnight ferry from Holyhead. We stayed a former seminary at Maynooth and took in the three games played that weekend.
MATCH ONE - v Cherry Orchard on the Friday night and played on a school pitch in the urban wastelands of Ballyfermot, an estate on the western side of Dublin. Spot the O'Riordans in the programme:
MATCH TWO - v Galway on the Saturday afternoon and played - for a reason I now forget - on the Galwegians RFC pitch. And isn't Galway a wonderful place?
MATCH THREE - v Sligo Rovers at a proper football ground. The drunks decided to leave the pub and attend this one. For the most part they lay comatose on the terracing:
