Today's Cardiff v Newcastle programme carried an article on Newcastle's last visit to Cardiff in 1983. The Mags won 2-0 with goals from Kevin Keegan and Peter Beardsley, his first for the club. Spot the players with Torquay United connections from these line-ups:  I've copied this picture from a copy in today's programme - it's not brilliant - but look who is in the thick of the action:  There was also a recollection of the Chrfistmas 1952 fixtures which - wait for it - saw Cardiff travelling to Newcastle for a Christmas Day game before both teams travelled to Cardiff on the same train for the 27 December return at Ninian Park. This was a 0-0 draw watched by 52,000. See who was playing centre-forward for Cardiff:   |

Roger Gibbins, who we bought from, and sold back to, Newport County circa 1986 after 46 appearances and 7 goals.
Wes Saunders, came from Dundee and played 74 times scoring eleven goals and, of course, became manager.
Chris Waddle, played seven times having played for Burnley before us, but failed to score. Went on to become a coach at Sheffield Wednesday.
And was Kenny Wharton related to Andy who played briefly for us in the mid-eighties on loan from Burnley?

And was Kenny Wharton related to Andy who played briefly for us in the mid-eighties on loan from Burnley? I've been down that pathway myself this evening. Kenny was born on Tyneside; Andy in Bacup (Lancashire). Each started at his respective local club so a link is probably unlikely... |

Spot the players with Torquay United connections from these line-ups.... Phil Dwyer was on trial with us in 1982 and played a couple of pre-season games at Bideford and Barnstaple alongside Exeter's Peter Hatch. We lost both matches and didn't have eleven fit players of our own less than a week before the start of the season. |

Having seen the Cardiff v Newcastle game in September, an odd twist of fate meant I saw last night's return fixture been the two clubs. Most enjoyable even if three early Newcastle goals meant the prospect - for the neutral - of a well-balanced game was immediately ruined.
Five recent arrivals for Newcastle including, of course, Mike Williamson (Oldway Primary and Paignton Community College according to the Herald Express) who did what he had to do very well. I'll scan the programme article about him when I'm back home.
Equally oddly I could see Sunderland play Wigan today for the second time this season. Not so sure about that one...there may be more adventurous alternatives.
And - for Budleigh's interest - an excellent new book called Pioneers of the North about the growth of football in the North East between 1870 and 1893. Scans may follow...
