on another subject , in the death column of yesterdays herald and express a george webber has passed away. i wonder if this was the welsh born goalie who played 118 games for torquay between 1950 and 53. he would have been the same age, 84. never saw him play, just before my time, but was reputedly a top keeper. Yes, unfortunately you are correct. Remarkably, George can take some of the credit for TUFC's promotion back to the Football League. George's daughter is the lady from Torbay Hospital who managed to sort out the face mask for Tim Sills that allowed him to play his decisive part in the play-offs. In recognition of her efforts, George and his family were the club's guests for the home play-off against Histon. I know George's son and so was lucky enough to be introduced to him in the Gulls' Nest after the match. Rest In Peace George.

I knew George through his son Steve (also a goalkeeper of no mean talent) and that was over forty years ago! Steve and I were playing contemporaries in the South Devon Youth league when I played for Newtor United and he was with Chelston under the managership of another Torquay United legend ~ Harry Smith, the father of Mark who also played for the club. A very nice and affable man was George Webber and Steve was very much in his father's mould as I recall. Sorry to hear of his loss.
