Well we can’t let those grammar school toffs get away with having threads on here with out us thicker boys having one of our own can we.
Many who have read the great Newton Abbot threads that merse and I put much work into, will know my first school was Milber Primary school on the Buckland Estate. I moved to the big boy’s school when I was eleven years old and that saw the parting of my childhood sweetheart, Julie Robbins who was the head girl at milber and her dad was the local policeman.
Mind you I had spent much time with some of the boys who were already at Highweek school long before I ever went to the school, you see my granny Best (I have talked about her before on here, she was the girl who was fathered by a lord in Plymouth who had been a naughty boy with one of his servants) worked at Meadowside.
Now Meadowside is a large house beside the main gates into the school and I always knew it as the naughty boy’s home, I’m not sure they all were, maybe some were just orphans. I often spent time there during the school holidays and at times when what ever family member who’s house I was living in had gone away for a holiday. Those times I would live at Meadowside for a week or two, but I do need to stress I was a guest and not an inmate.
I always remember having to go through the small tiny door that opened in the main big doors, you had to step though it and mind you head and then you soon heard the voice of Mr Weight (I believe that is how you spell it) he ran meadowside and while he had a good sense of humour, we was not a man to mess and ruled the home very strictly.
So now the time came for me to start at Highweek school for boys and the first thing to say is boy did I miss the girls, OK I loved girls and lets be honest you can play better games with them like doctors and nurses( I loved that game) far better than cowboys and Indians.
Being a short ass had its own problems, why do the bigger boys think its brave to pick on the little ones, well those that did soon found out I was never afraid to stick up for myself and was more than happy to hit back.
When Petef joined the forum I sent him a PM asking if he had a brother called Alan, it turns out he knew of him but it was a different family. Now that boy joined the school when I was in the second year and what a thug he was and he really did bully little Dave R. But one day I had enough and don’t ask how, but I laid him out cold and he never messed with me ever again after that.
Maybe being an all boy’s school was the reason the school was very strict and had no problems dishing out the cane and other forms of punishment, I got the cane more times than I care to remember. It was never the case I was really bad, more the class clown who did it because of a real need to be liked and popular with the other boys in the class.
Brim Leonard loved to use a plimsoll to give you six of the best, while Rod Layers the art teacher would get you to bend down and put your head under a shelve three foot of the ground, when he canned you, you also got a sore head into the bargain.
Mr Guest the English teacher who walked to Highweek everyday from Kingskerswell, would jump of a chair swinging the cane on your bun as he came down, his always hurt the most. There were times when the teacher sent you to get the headmasters cane. Now that was just a bit more serious as you had to go to his office and pick up the cane and a book.
It always seemed a long walk back to the classroom carrying the headmasters cane, all those you passed knew what you had in your hand and once the teacher had given you six of the best, he entered your name into the book and then you had to take it back to the headmaster.
If your crime was really bad then the shame was to be caned by the headmaster himself, he would sometimes do this in the playground at break time or even worse in assembly in the morning in front of the whole school.
I nearly forgot about Mr Guy the metal work teacher, he used a piece of steel to cane you with, no wonder no one got upset when a gas cylinder once caught fire and he got burnt, but I loved My Griffith the best, one leg shorter than the other he had, but he was the music teacher and I was a good singer even back in those days.
The school had a tuck shop that opened at break times, me and my mates always had money to get what ever we wanted from the shop. You see on a Monday you mother gave you the money to pay for the school dinners for the week, only we never paid it in.
Monday lunch time we would dine in a café down the town, but would save enough money to last us for out tuck for the week. From Tuesdays to the end of the week just went to the school canteen and had a school dinner, no one ever checked if you had paid or not and as we were regular faces in there they must have just thought we had.
One day after school Charlie Caunter, Roy Trays and myself went and had a skinhead haircut at the barbers, only when we went to school the next day we were banned from going on the school trip that day that had been paid for, don’t think it would matter now a days somehow.
So who else went to Highweek School For Boys? If you did then please feel free to add to this thread.
