Carol drowning out a Drifters album with her singing, while its a painful noise to an old pro, she is having the time of her life down stairs and just for that reason alone, I'll put up with her not so perfect note singing ;D

Damn this quote facility! Maybe Dave could PM me an idiots guide to quoting people! Would be interested to hear your thoughts on the new National album. Whilst I am definitely enjoying it, I don't feel it improves on either Boxer or Alligator. Saw them at Koko a few years ago and, poor acoustics aside, loved them. Will check out Delphic. Back on the Grandaddy subject, I was reading a heartwarming tale over the weekend about a Grandaddy talkscape forum rasing money for the lead singer's sister's cancer treatment. Basically, she was diagnosed with a walnut sized brain tumor and was very seriously ill. As the family have little income, a fan decided to collate every one of the bands rarities, unrleased music, demo cassetes and all sorts of previously unavailable material. The object was to turn everything into one big bundle and offer it to fans for a recommended donation. As the campaign went on, more and more fans came forward with little additions to add to the project and 1 year on since its launch, over $4,000 has been raised. Allowing for the fact that other than people's time and goodwill, this has cost nothing to produce, die-hard fans (such as myself, I ordered mine yesterday) have got a fantastic package while helping to raise funds for a very ill 'family member' I truly belive this shows the power of the online community (like ours here) and I thought it was a touching story worth sharing here. Jeremy I have to be honest and say that I've never heard the new album or "Boxer" until today. I gave them a whirl on the strength of a mate's recommendation. I listened to the new album first. It's a bit Tindersticks meets Interpol meets a lot of dope and the Red House Painters. I don't mind it but I don't think I appreciate it now at this stage in my life as I would've done in my early twenties when I was miserable and poor. The Boxer album is better as it's just a bit more upbeat and melodic. Chris, For some reason, I missed this post when you wrote it. I'm actually in complete agreement with you. The new National album is leaving me a bit cold and I'm guessing that age may come into a bit for me too. Still a few outstanding tracks from the previous two albums such as 'Secret Meeting', The Geese of Beverley Road' and 'Slow Show' As for Interpol, I have to admit that I overplayed 'Turn on the Bright Lights' to death when I first got it, but 'Antics' didn't have quite the same effect on me. However, I've got everything that Stuart Staples has ever done with Tindersticks and I'm as much a fan as I was 10 years or more ago when I first got into them. Not sure if you've come across Wild Beasts' album this year? Well worth a go IMO. x

But it's seems to be normal practice these days for a band to follow up a decent first album with a poor one (Kaiser Chiefs, Arctic Monkey's, Bloc Party etc). I downloaded the Wild Beasts a couple of weeks ago. The guy has a strange voice but they're very good. A friend recently did me a copy of the album by The xx which is also very nice.

.....the almighty Bebop Deluxe......... I've always felt that "Electrical Language" was the perfect bridge between the mid-70's guitar-rock style and the late 70's electronic movement. But Bill didn't manage to progress it further, possibly being side-tracked back down his Gibson into the "harder" Red Noise. By the time he managed to catch up, circa Chimera, Midge Ure had hi-jacked Ultravox! into a new pop machine and Gary Numan had realised that he was the automaton symbol that the mainstream media wanted to lead New Wave into the 80's. A great shame as the genius of Nelson has rarely been acknowledged by the wide audience that he deserves.

Axe Victim, Sunburst Finish, Futurama and Modern Music were their best. Great album cover for Axe.
