Wishbone Ash are tossers, I knew them, went to several gigs with them last decade and they are a bunch of over-rated toss pot coke heads, no time for for those losers at all! Not bad on stage but shockingly poor back stage, embarrassing really, I left the afters early twice! Wishbone Ash were my favourite band of the seventies. Andy Powell with that V-shaped lead guitar, Ted Turner also lead guitar contributing to their distinctive sound, Martin Turner on bass, and Steve Upton on drums. Two of them were Torbay boys but I can't remember which two. After a brilliant first album and that classic track Phoenix their third album Argus stands up there amongst the great albums of all time like Fleetwood Mac's Rumours, Led Zeppelin's 4th album, The Yes Album, Supertramp's Breakfast in America, and Tull's Aqualung. I saw them loads of times live and a particular memory for me was seeing them as the supporting band for Emerson Lake & Palmer at a one day festival at the Oval cricket ground when they completely blew ELP off rhe stage. I noticed they were still doing live acts at quite inferior venues to the ones they were used to (they were particularly big in the USA) and I assume it is not the same line up. Hope you have no similar reports about my favourite football team Aussie! Sorry Steve only telling it how it was, oh and I did see some YTS boys walking out of the bookies last night but I guess that ain`t that bad! Does Goeff Harrop read this?

Your right Johnny boy you cant beat the original but I like to try different things. I was listening to a near 20 minute live version of The End this afternoon. I am fond of Back Door Man as well Can you save me a seat tomorrow night as I won't be able to get there until 7.30 due to Mrs C attending some keep fit/Palatie night? Cheers

Hi fellow pop pickers ...I regret I have not read through this thread for a bit and its' been a great pleasure to have just done so, looking at the last few posts - great effort by all and fantastic info gleaned from Jon as usual!.......... .......now, as is my wont as a rather gnarled, auld-ish these days night security guard bod, I listen to night radio on Radio 2 and especially to Alex Lester (0200-0500 - Sun nights to Thurs nights) - he is right up there with Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconies', also Bob Harris's shows for eclectic playlists and on his Lesters' Library slot a couple of nights ago played a song by a group who rejoiced in the name Magna Carta - it was called "Highway To Spain" - and the second I heard it, it evoked memories, probably distant, of paisley-wearin', bandana-sportin', flipflop-clad, toke-wavin', peace-lovin' hippy dippy ol' potheads from the late 60's - a bit of Googlery (the other similar song I recalled was "Ventura Highway" by America btw) revealed I was spot on! - I did have a couple of songs already by them - "Airport Song" was one but didn't know too much of them....... www.magna-carta.info/ is the link ........it is on, amongst other albums by this outfit, "Tomorrow Never Comes - The Anthology 1969-2006", now ordered by me...... PS ......... note for my good muzo companion and fellow shire from the Mr_GBH days, Lord_Tanktop, Banger of the Bongos, Progmeister_General_Chelston_Command and Sir_Chelstongull himself Phil - when it turns up, can I do you a copy sire? - I think verily thou wouldst dig this? - the sleeve is by Roger Dean btw.....

Dooleys my arse .......I will have you all know that I actually watched the Dooleys play live back in 1979/1980 time at the Drumbeat Club HMS DRAKE, the barracks in Plymouth when Mr_W was a young bellbottom-clad Jack Tar in the Andrew (Royal Navy - D171482W if any of you are of a similar RN vintage Service No. wise) - also on I think that night were Liquid Gold - a fierce night of bopping and minesweeping developed with a late fast-black down to the flesh-pots of Diamond Lils and Union Street I seem to recall, fantakkers times, mines' a Watneys Starlight Tops........ .....there, I feel better now for revealing that........ ....all together now with feeling and after four, join in the chorus with Lord_Tanktop (Phil Chelstongull) and I as we attempt to recreate that great Liquid Gold hit...... ......"Dance Yourself Dizzy, When They Boogaloo".......... (oh dear, how very oh dear).....

Crikey, that took me back.
In '75 I was one of those overpaid Art Apps at Fisgard (D154283T - you never forget). Did a year and then left. Rod Stewart was at number one with 'Sailing' at the time. Very apt as I arrived at HMS Fisgard. Can't ever hear it without thinking about that place.
By the time Liquid Gold came around I was back in uniform but a green one in Devizes. That always makes me think of the Rising Sun on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and the Royal Oak disco night on a Sunday.
Now I'm a fan of Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson, Sugarland, and many other country stars, as country music just can't be avoided in Florida. Not that I mind; they're all brilliant.

Not that I mind; they're all brilliant. ....nice one florida, always good to chat with old shipmates (in the broad sense) from past days!...... ...."Sailing" was also the theme tune for the "Sailor" TV series from the 70s - featuring (the old) HMS ARK ROYAL and its Ships' Company - as sung by Rod himself - although the DVD version of the series has only the tune and not him singing - copyright gubbinses etc I suspect - DVD now worth hundreds and hundreds of quid as not easily obtainable, even though only came out a few years ago - I have it though ha, ha (and the vids)........ ......all Tiffs (or whatever they're called these days!!) now do training at HMS SULTAN in Gosport or HMS COLLINGWOOD in Fareham, Hants - near me......... ....a website for you florida (and any other old Jack Tars)..... www.romft.com...just need to register - immediate - easy - free - tons of old dits etc on the boards.... ......the other one is........ www.navy-net.co.uk/Forums.html......this is a massive site - forums deffo worth opening and having a read of! - can be viewed without registering etc - I recommend the Diamond Lils section for some great run-ashore stuff etc........ ......cheers shippers, one all round...... ...back to the music... .......I believe on Weekend Wogan on Radio 2 this Sunday 1100-1300 are Judie Tzuke (fab name from the 70s) and our very own and Dartmoors' finest, the excellent Seth Lakeman..... ....this should be really good - great memories of Judie Tzuke (very under-rated imho)........ ...reckon this show should go on the red button thingy on BBC for viewing over early next week if previous episodes are anything to go by.......

I read just recently that the title 'Artificer' has been retired by the Navy. Can't remember what they're called now. End of an era, either way!
