I have posted this elsewhere as a continuation of the Hele Spurs thread but felt that with the Graham Bond connection it may be of wider interest. The programme is for the game Good Friday, April the 23rd, 1951 between Hele Spurs and R.A.S.C. (Denbury) in the 'Torbay Herald' Cup Final played at Newton Abbot and won by the Royal Army Service Corps team based at the old airfield near Denbury. One piece of interest for Torquay United supporters is the Hele Spurs number eight, one Graham Bond who of course played such a strong role in our 1959/60 promotion side. And was that the Southampton team coming to play a match against Newton Abbot on the 16th of April?

....Love some of these old adverts on these progs. I remember Mr Kerslake and his local Tomatoes, the day after i passed my driving test i was sent there to collect a lorry load......only to tip the lot on the Newton Road when i broke sharply to avoid squashing a cat......they had to close the road and people were coming out of their houses to take home what they could carry.......god did i get some stick for that one ;D! Sad really when you consider that there is not one commercial Tomato grower in the whole South West these days. Also like the Royal Standard ad........come for a pleasant evening..... (unless you're a Wolves fan of course )

Yes thanks Leigh for putting them up they are really great, for me and also I feel for Merse the ad that stands out is the Black Cat Cafe in Newton Abbot. It was a great cafe and I remember so well when I was 8 years old waiting in there for my mother to return with a toy for me. I had been to the school dentist in Courtney Park and had the gas, who remembers having gas? that big thing they stuck in your mouth to keep you jaws open, then that thing placed over your nose so your took in the gas. Child cruelty of the highest order if you ask me, but we never had a child line back then to phone

That could well have been my uncle Bill (W) Parsons in the Hele Spurs team - I am 99.9% certain he was playing for them back then. If I am right, the Parsons family and the Stuckeys (my mum is Bruce's cousin) were related and I seem to recall some of the Stuckeys playing for Hele as well.

And was that the Southampton team coming to play a match against Newton Abbot on the 16th of April? Yes. Possibly the game where Pat Parker was spotted. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_Parker_(footballer)torquayfansforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=tufchistory&thread=3069&page=1Torquay boy Sid Cann was Southampton's manager at the time. The wiki reference to a pre-season friendly is obviously wrong - we all know they weren't allowed in those days, don't we? Southampton were quite regular April visitors to South Devon in the early 50s. They played us in a benefit match for Calland and Conley on 26 April 1950 and played Newton Abbot again in a friendly on 22 April 1952. 1950/51 was the first season in which Newton Spurs dropped the Spurs from their name. Number 6 for Spurs is Bob Croot - someone I know very well. In fact I mentioned him in a thread on the St Marychurch bombing - he was the one in the doorway of the sweetshop when it blew in and the sweet jars went flying. Budleigh, can you change the thread title? It should say 1951. One last question. Why on earth were they advertising a game on April 16 in the programme for a match on April 23? Actually, looking again I think the date of the Cup Final is wrong. Google tells me that Good Friday 1951 was on MARCH 23rd - which would stack up with April 16 being a Monday. They should also have plugged Newton Abbot's home match on April 9 - a friendly with Torquay United Reserves.

There was a very good young centre half called Pat Parker from Winkleigh which isn't a million miles from Bow, who trained with us at Plainmoor; played at Newton Spurs and with "Stefano" in the Western League with Torquay Reserves. Our manager at Spurs, Bill Anderson; was always waxing lyrical about Pat Parker Senior and I seemed to get the impression that the "PP" we played with was some relation. He was a bit short to be a professional central defender though and I think he played most of his later football for Barnstaple Town or maybe Bideford in the Southern and Western Leagues.

Capital Gull You are correct that Bill Parsons playing for Hele Spurs he was my first captain when I started playing cricket for Barton in 1958. Another name that I also noticed was Roy Horswell who I also played cricket with at Barton for many years .An excellent cricketer and captain. He also played several games for United reserves in the 1950's. I remember watching the Southampton game and I cant remember very much about the match but pretty certain Peter Sillett played in that match who went on to play for Chelsea and England.I remember standing behind the goal at the cricket ground end, when they were seperate grounds, and we stood on mostly cinders. There weren't any terraces as such.
