I have enjoyed my 55th Christmas day, but it will be like nearly all the others, forgotten as the year moves on toward the next one. I find it a bit strange that its one day that never seems to stick in my memory bank, maybe it’s because they have nearly always been much of a much ness.
The Christmas day of 1990 now that’s a different matter, I can remember nearly every single minute of it and all that got said that day, but then that was Christmas day unlike any I had ever had before or since.
I know I don’t remember my first Christmas, but how great to see a programme put up on this forum today of our Christmas day match in 1954, I was only two and a half months old when the game was played on my very first Christmas day.
I heard on the radio this week that a survey showed most men can’t even remember what their wife bought them last Christmas, I told Carol about it an hour ago and she said “go on then what did I but you last year” I simply could not remember and when she told me it made it even madder I did not know, as I went and bought it at Staples. It was my 22 inch wide screen PC monitor, now you would think I would remember all the time I spent deciding the one I wanted.
The house was mental this morning, so many people calling in, mostly to see Carol and young grandchildren who came to collect and open their presents in our home, all this going on while we tried to get the dinner cooked. Children are funny at times; sometimes it’s the cheapest and simplest gift that seems to please them the most, the most expensive one not getting a second look at.
By 1pm we got the house empty bar Steven who is carols youngest son who still lives with us and Anthony and it was time to eat another fabulous Carol roast, its one meal she does get spot on and after that is was time for us at last to open our presents
Some of my presents I already knew what they were, some new memory for my laptop and a few new things to upgrade again my desktop PC, presents I went and got to make sure I got the right bits. A few presents got a few laughs as Carol, Ant and Steve could not believe someone had bought such a gift for me, but I joined if with the laughter and saw the funny side of it.
The day has been the same as any other in some respects and that is our home has just been a happy place to be in, you may find this hard to believe, but there are never and arguments, shouting or falling out in our home. It’s the reason all the kids in the family love to go and stay at Carols and Dave’s.
But I expect in some families today there has been major bust ups, fallings out that may take some repairing and there may have been some cases of violence that has happened and yet yesterday they would have all been looking forward to today.
I never understand why people fall out the way they do, or why or even how they can inflicted pain and suffering on others, but then I’m a real peace lover and also a people lover, I only want friendship and never look to make enemies as life is to short and why fill it with pain, when joy, fun and laughter will make it all so much nicer.
Yet pain and sadness will come your way no matter how nice and good you are, it is as much a part of life as the good times and good things that will also come your way. Life really is a big roller coaster ride and you had better make sure you enjoy the best bits and deal with the worst in a fit and proper way, a way that will allow you to once again enjoy the highs the next time they come again.
As I was writing this, happy and feeling at peace with my life, I suddenly remembered some of last Christmas, but only after I glanced out of the window. You see a dear friend of Carols and a man I got to know and like so well, did not have the Christmas he had hoped for last year. A man in his early 40’s, but a man who learned his wife was not going to be spending last Christmas, or any other for that matter ever again with him.
The result was he sadly could not take the pain and hung himself in his home that I see looking out of my window. The thing is we need to stop and sometimes spare a thought for those whose lives are not as happy as ours and if there is anything we can do to try and brighten up their lives we should give it a go.
We may just make the difference between them next year looking forward to Christmas and not being here to even think about it. Anyway I hope you have all had a wonderful happy day and those who are going to our Boxing Day game, are so looking forward to it.
This week’s winner has put so much time and effort into the forum this week, the work required to scan and then size, upload and then put the images on the forum for us all to enjoy, really do take a lot of time.
Most days he has treated us to some really great programmes and I’m so pleased to announce this years Christmas number one poster of the week is Timbo.
Very well done Tim and thanks from me for all the work you put into our programme room, top man a great supporter of both Torquay United and the TFF
You can find all Timbo's post made this week in our programme room.
