This is the oldest autograph in my collection and belongs to our pre-war player, Ben Morton (born 1910, died 1962). Although he only played for a season and a half for us, he was prolific scoring thirty-three goals in 49 league matches. He also played in one FA Cup game and five Third Division (South) Cup games scoring four goals. He appears in the programme I posted on here for the away game at Clapton Orient in 1937. Born in Sheffield Morton first played for Stourbridge before moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers and then to Manchester United where he is in the history books as one of the few players to have only played one game for them, a match against West Ham in 1935. He was consequently transferred to Torquay United where his record speaks for itself and which prompted Swindon Town to splash out a record £1,000 for his services in 1937. Having taken awhile to establish himself he became a fairly prolific scorer for the Robins before finding his way back to Stourbridge. One interesting snippet from this autograph book page is the reference to him playing in the Birmingham League for Revo F.C. I cannot find any record of this team.

Another gem you bring us Leigh, with all you must have spent on your collection, I'm surprised that new wife of yours can still be allowed that piece of plastic she takes shopping with her everywhere

Leigh, I think we've talked about the "Played in Britain" books before. Well, it just happens the Birmingham edition talks about the Birmingham and District Works AFA. And, in the list of the 677 teams that were once members (not all at the same time), you'll find Revo Electric Sports. As you can see from one of those rather specialist websites, Revo made street lighting: www.midlandcountiesstreetlighting.co.uk/LantHPS34.htmlRon Atkinson apparently started out in the works league with BSA Sports. Ben Morton scored a lot of goals for a pretty poor Torquay side. I'd imagine his sale (to a team in the same division) in October 1937 - after he'd scored ten goals in the first twelve games - didn't go down too well. We then scored just twenty goals in the remaining thirty games of the season.

Found the list.... (And had the book next to me when I wrote my piece...!) The one thing that always impresses me with the 'Played in Birmingham' book, and talking of Works teams, is the wonderful sports pavilion shown on the cover belonging to Cadbury's at the Bournville Lane ground and with the 1902 Bourneville Athletic Football team pictured on and in front of it. I suppose the Yanks will know name it the 'New Kraft-work Creme Egg Memorial Stadium'...
