So - two 'home' games in the first week of the season. Could anyone who knows the territory suggest a pub to meet in for each? I don't seem to have spent much of the six years I've been in London in either Daghenham or Norwood, for some reason, otherwise I'd kick start things myself...

Don't know about Palace, but probably the best bet for Dagenham & Redbridge would be their clubhouse Chris.
What with all the transport problems (ie Tube engineering works) over the weekend, it would be the safest option to head straight for Victoria Road.
From memory, I think they will charge 50p to "sign in", but they have one or two quite spacious suites at the club which will be able to cater for the away fans on the day.
I personally wouldn't bother with the pubs in the near vicinity.....they're all absolute toilets!!

Chris I think you'd find that The Alliance, just outside Norwood Junction Station by the clock tower is the preferred choice of most CGs for any visit to Selhurst Park Chris; whilst Kev's advice for D&R is spot on....................the nearest decent pub to Victoria Road is to be found just ouside Dagenham Heathway Station and is called the Lord Denman ~ a Weatherstone's pub with exceptionally good food but give the farcical underground situation a no go really as the walk to the ground from there is not only complicated but a little "back street" It's not the D&R fans you want to worry about but the Red Necks who "support" the Wet Hampsters and the local Shell Suit City hoodies who are best avoided. So the D&R Clubhouse it should be and very nice people in there they are too.

Looks like it will have to be a spot amongst the home supporters for me given the ground/ticket situation. Also looks a bit of a b*ll ache to get to from South London if the TFL website is anything to go by.
New ground for me though, plus my first chance to see the boys in action against League 2 opponents this season. No way I'm missing this one.

Looks like it will have to be a spot amongst the home supporters for me given the ground/ticket situation. The FACT that well less than a hundred of the 419 strong Yellow Army who sat in the stink shed that is the Shitehorse Lane Stand had bothered to obtain pre-paid tickets from Plainmoor on Tuesday night shows in what growing contempt ordinary football fans are treating the ludicrously out of touch arrangements made on their behalf by football clubs and the authorities. People are even prepared to get ripped off and pay a couple of quid more by paying on the day than join in these stupid schemes, and whoever thinks that 350 seats stuck in a corner will be either adequate or acceptable for our following on Saturday wants their tiny heads examining. I'm sure D&R will find that at least 600 or so turn up on Saturday and they should be preparing to cater for a number in excess of that given that their average home gate barely touches the six thousand capacity of the stadium. Don't forget, 419 at Palace only represents the number who opted to sit behind the goal rather than the not insignificent amount who realised they could get a much better view for the same price AND use the executive facilties (Errm...... albeit only a bar and a hot dog trolley but there were tables laid with table cloths on which to spill one's ketchup ) Judging by the delight that was evident to my right and my left to say nothing of behind me when we scored, I would say our true support on Tuesday was nearer that six hundred mark that I forecast for Saturday and that was for a mid week game!

I contacted D&G FC this morning on the subject of Saturday's inadequate capacity for visiting fans and received an understanding response from their Managing Director Steve Thompson in which he emphasized the following: 1- He says the configuration of the ground prevents the provision of other areas being given over to away fans. 2- Torquay United have only sold 260 tickets up until yesterday and he has arranged for all those unsold (currently only 90 before today's office opening) to be returned for sale on the away turnstile on the day. 3- He says D&R have relocated the area put aside for visiting scouts, comps and players wives to another "less advantageous"part of the ground to increase the normal away seating from 200 to 350. 4- He says the decision to go "all ticket" for our fans was not unilateral but done in conjunction with Plainmoor who "expected" there to be a sell out. Whilst he has stated that "this is all they can do" and he hasn't stated that OUR fans are welcome in the other sections, I have asked him respectfully to instruct the gate men and stewards to show compassion and common sense to any Gulls fans in other sections of the ground and I think those who intend to use those "other" (home) areas reciprocate by adopting a similar common sense and well mannered approach and NOT wear colours, bellow out songs and chants and celebrate any goals in a sensible manner as befitting a guest in someone's home.....................not ideal for some, I know; but surely better than being denied entry or getting chucked out. Many people claim to mourn the passing of the day when fans of opposing sides could stand together and mix socially, and it's only three years ago that fans of BOTH sides could freely change ends at half time at Victoria Road ~ well this is an opportunity to mix with the home fans and anyone who abuses this deserves all they get in my opinion. Let's hope that at the final whistle ALL the Torquay United fans in the ground can rise as one and applaud OUR boys off the pitch!

Cheers for the info Merse.
To be honest, I can't see how it's in D&R'S interest to turn people away when they're charging £20 For entry. 250 Gulls in the home end is £5k so it would be madness for them to start interrogating people and refusing entry.
I second your advice for supporters to comport themselves respectfully and sensibly. Nobody likes away fans larging it up in the Pop Side so hopefully our support will be adult enough to behave.

The transport situation I suppose depends on your tolerance for such things. But it's fairly straightforward to get a train to Romford from Liverpool Street and then the Kev-and-Sal-approved 103 bus to just outside the ground.

I just don't like spending my Saturdays hopping from buses to train to tubes, especially after a few pints in the pub before and after! Still, will be fine if we get a point or more

Steve Thompson of D&G FC has further comntacted me today to stress that they pride themselves on being a family orientated club (which I can vouch for through personal experience) have received nothing but exemplary police intelligence on OUR fans and have no intention of spoiling any of our fans' day tomorrow and intend to deal with everybody to their satisfaction. Help them help us is what I stress to everybody going tomorrow, and use common sense.
