This is an interesting one-sheet programme issued for the floodlit game on the 22nd of November 1955, and played as a benefit for player R. Mayes who had broken his leg in a South Devon game at the end of the previous season. Not only of note as it was under the lights but because a certain E. Pym was playing for the SDL team, as a St. Marychurch player, before joining us a couple of seasons later. The lower portion of the sheet advertises the next floodlit game, being that against Middlesbrough the following week. |

If my memory serves me well the no6 for S D League Pacey played for Luton Town when they lost to Notts Forest 2 1 in 1959 cup final.I am sure he was doing his national service at Denbury.

It's "A Pacey" on that SDL programme but - as sillsunited suggests - it may well be the Dave Pacey who went on to play for Luton in the 1959 FA Cup Final:   The Wembley programme mentions that Dave Pacey was playing as an amateur for Hitchin Town when he did his National Service. Also note the presence of a future Torquay manager - and a future Argyle boss - in Luton's line-up. |

Torquay won this one 4-0 (Horswell, McGovern 2, Calland) infront of a crowd of 770.
It is always difficult categorising games played by a "Torquay United XI", but I would have to put this down as a reserve team fixture - not one of the team played in the FA Cup tie the Saturday before.

i can confirm it was the dave pacey playing for the sdl x1.
he did part of his national service at debury as part of the royal signals regiment.
thee was quite some talk at the time tat the signals had an outstanding wing half playing for them, which was pacey.
there was another game around the mid fifties that was played at queens park in paignton between either an army eleven or combined services versus devon.
i remember the publicity at the time because it featured the return of tommy northcottto devon since he was transferred to cardiff in the first div.

I'm almost sure the W Lucas of Hele Spurs lived next door to us in Davis Avenue before they moved to Bristol.
