Torquay United 'A' team's first win in the Torbay Herald Cup Final played at Newton Abbot on Friday, April 4th, 1958, against Beesands Rovers. The only player that seems to have made an appearance for the 1st team was Brian Lancaster who made 18 league appearances and one in the cup before moving on to Bath City.

No wonder you suggested a programme room Leigh really great to see such programmes from these sorts of games, must say you have kept them in nice condition all these years, what was the tea hut like? and did you get the bus to the game or drive yourself?

Ha ha.... Actually i've got some going back alot longer. One especially from the thirties is a real gem! I may pop it on here later next week...
It's amazing reading them... It makes me want to go back in time and see what it was like to watch some of the games. Not so much the first team games, but the 'secondary' matches, the 'A' team, the reserves, the friendlies.

Is that Brian's dad or uncle playing at centre half? Perhaps you could ask him Leigh? The A team did the South Devon League and Herald Cup double in 1958, but apparently the team then split up with most going to Newton Abbot Spurs who were then in the Exeter & District League. The new team ended up runners-up to Beesands in 1958/59. It looks like Beesands must have had one hell of a team around about that time. Does anyone know the story behind that? I see that the SDL website lists Herald Cup winners, but not League champions. Does anybody know any SDL officials that they could ask to sort that out?

My son Anthony(TUAFC1)is the South Devon League Fixtures Secretary and also the webmaster for the South Devon league site, think he's the best one to ask Jon

This is the programme for the 1959 cup final programme which Beesands once again reached, this time losing out to a Teignmouth side containing some good local names such as Harris, Gilpin, Butt, Apps & Tooley. The Tooley's were a well-known sporting family, especially Fred who was a fine boxer and is now a councillor.
