I wasn't sure if this should go in the TUFC history room, but as it is the 'Torquay United Ex-Professionals Cup' final, was held at Plainmoor and has pages written by both the United chairman and manager I thought maybe so. Perhaps there are names here that others recall playing with or against. (Note: The pages of adverts have been left out)

Mate that deserves to be in here with out a doubt, quality mullets in abundance on both sides, would have made even Noddy Holder proud. This history room is for more than just the TUFC team, it needs to encompass everything that goes on and around the club and local areas as well, so on that note I will say " quality thread my son" keep `em coming!

I played for Watcombe Park around the same time. That team swept away all opposition. Maurice Cox, Me, Nick Cowell, Stew Foster, Bobby Essam, Andy Perrett are a few of the names i remember. We won 3-1 against Brixham Grasshoppers at Plainmoor, i scored the 2nd and made the 3rd. I think Stew got the 1st.

I was at school with Martin Perry, the Richard Hammond look-a-like in the Trojans team! He was to the school team what Danny Stevens is to the Gulls!
Last saw him at a school re-union in 2002 when he had grown considerably in stature. I think he lives away from the area now but believe he was refereeing at a reasonable level at some stage.

Phil,
I thought Martin was at Foxhole? But if you went to Hayes Road and you were in the same year as me (we both celebrated the same big birthday this year) you may have known other mates of mine - Jon Walke, Ian Wellens, Paul Davey, Phil Barry and Karen Gillard (aka My Misses!)

Barton asked on another thread about Torquay-born players who never played for Torquay.
In this Watcombe team you have Ian Doyle who not only played League Football, but FIRST DIVISION (the real one) football for Bristol City.
I can remember being surprised at the time as he hadn't seemed to stand out from that generation of players. I didn't think he was as highly rated as say Nigel Batterton or Nick Cowell, let alone the God-like Maurice Cox.

I immediately recognised Ian Doyle's name on that team sheet but couldn't place him. He would have been in the 4th year (year 10) when I was in the upper sixth. I now remember following his progress at Bristol City. He played against Stoke and Forest in 79/80 (stepping in for Chris Garland) and against Swansea early in 80/81 (by which time City had been relegated). Then what?

Karen Gillard rings a bell - did she go to Hayes Road?

Maurice Cox was a classic style centre forward, i used to play alongside him banging in the scraps. I broke my leg in a game against St.Marychurch Devils in the november of '74, managed to get back playing by late march the same season (big mistake, stuffed my knees big time) and ended up still top scorer for that season. MC played a couple of games for TUFC in Div 4 and i think he scored at least 1.

He also had a spell at Huddersfield and I remember working with one of their supporters who reckoned he was a real wasted talent who made a big impression in his short time there.

I can remember being surprised at the time as he hadn't seemed to stand out from that generation of players. I didn't think he was as highly rated as say Nigel Batterton or Nick Cowell, let alone the God-like Maurice Cox. A forty-odd year-old mystery solved by a two-page Ian Doyle interview in the excellent Backpass magazine. www.backpassmagazine.co.uk/I could never work out why Doyle did not impress me as much as his Torquay contemporaries in the mid to late 70s. The obvious explanation - that I cannot spot a decent player when I see one - did not appeal to me. It seems that when I witnessed Doyle's talents he was severely handicapped by a dodgy knee. An operation fixed it and transformed him temporarily - but the problem returned and forced him out of the pro game. The knee problems were caused by the abysmal sporting facilities at TBGS - landing in a rock hard sandpit doing the high jump. I remember that sandpit well. Maybe landing in that sandpit scuppered my dreams of being a professional footballer. Do you think I could sue?
