Although I saw the game, I can't recall whether or not Gerry Howshall actually played on the day or not but if he did it would have been a very special day for him as it would have been for Trevor Shepherd but I'm pretty certain he did not. David Pleat was at the outset of his very successful management caree with the Southern Leaguers who gave us such a hard game that afternoon. I was thinking of writing to him suggesting he take a scouting trip around Kings Cross to watch the Camden & Islington Youth League that Anthony plays in, but then I thought better of it as the last time he did that he got into hot water!

I didn't realise Nuneaton had so many Devon connections - Mervo's favourite TUFC loan player Trevor Shepherd, Merse's mate Gerry Howshall, David Pleat of Exeter and Spurs fame and another Exeter player in Ernie Wilkinson. Gerry Baker was a full international - for USA. www.margatefchistory.co.uk/gerrybaker.htmEDIT : I see Merse was quicker of the mark than I was!

Interesting that the game before this one we beat Blackburn and that was our first win in 14 games, so where were we in the table when this game was played? and where did we finish in the end?

Dave Tearse got the winner that day against Nuneaton Borough and underneath the picture you can see how the Rothmans Football Yearbook recorded the result: Note, however, the lack of a Torquay United used substitute. The Centenary History tells us something quite different: Ah, but the elsewhere in the history - in the statistical section - the line-up is given again without mention of a Torquay United substitute: The names relating to the numbers are at the top of the page above the league results for that season - we finished 23rd and were relegated, Dave - and number 6 relates to Brian W Hill, the defender from Coventry, rather than Brian Hill the ex-Grimsby, Huddersfield and Blackburn winger (who isn't listed as playing in the Nuneaton match). Brian W Hill was listed at 6 in the programme (no guarantee he played of course) and furthermore, in his programme notes below, Jack Edwards talks about the loss of Brian Hill from a defensive position. Nor did Brian W Hill play again until Boxing Day. This rather suggests it was a case of Brian Hill replacing Brian W Hill: All very easy to confuse and, if you look again at the centenary history, Brian W Hill is listed at number 11 for the FA Cup third round match at Bolton. Unless we played an extra defender I reckon there's a possibility it was Brian Hill in that game (partly because he'd played in the previous league game which Brian W Hill appears to have missed).
