Our third foray in the fourth round of the FA Cup was away to a strong Second Division (today’s Championship) Leicester City in the 1970/71 season when we played them at Filbert Street in mid-week after the aborted 23rd January 1971 date, postponed due to the weather. A game lost 3-0 in front of a crowd of just over 23,000 having already beaten Aston Villa, Chelmsford and Lincoln in the previous three rounds. Some known players in their team include Peter Shilton, David Nish, Alistair Brown and Len Glover. This team went on to win the league and promotion to the 1st Division (today's Premiership).
The line-up was as the programme excepting the wrong Welsh was shown at Number 7 where Alan Welsh played rather than Eric. The substitute was John Rudge.
Interesting points in a programme that has a good amount of space dedicated to Torquay United as the away team include the printing of the United results from the season so far, a great team photo, further photos of Micky Cave and Eric Welsh, as well as a good write-up of the club by Keith Perry of the Herald Express.
But most interesting is the opening notes explaining how there was a special bond between the clubs going back 44 years to the season we got promoted into the league, up until the time of this match with their purchase from United of a young Ken Sandercock who, of course, returned to United later in the year.
And then there is the manager of Leicester City on this day, a certain Frank O’Farrell….
With a further small twist, our manager Allan Brown had been sacked by Luton Town, and consequently hired by United, for showing interest in the Leicester job at the time O’Farrell was appointed.
And what a brilliant page entitled ‘Be Prepared for D-Day’ as the club print the new prices for admittance to Filbert Street after the change over to Decimal Currency which was only three weeks away. Note that the programme cover showed the price in both old and new money. Good to see that the previous owner of this programme didn’t take the advise given on the bottom of the page to ‘Tear out this page and keep it’!
