This is a very special programme for me as it was the day I was born... In the middle of some of the worse weather seen in this country, but with just enough of a thaw to get the game played and my Dad to get Mum to Newton Abbot hospital where I was born as the game went on.... We won 2-0 in front of 2,736 with a debut goal from Peter Anderson and an own goal from Hartlepools Lackenby. And purely by chance (or was it?) my first son was born on a winning home game day, last October the 31st against Northampton. Not only that but the attendance was 2,732, or rather 2,733 as I rushed in at half-time without being accounted for!

We were sat in third place when we finished our season on May 6, but the three teams below us all had FIVE games still to play: 1 Brentford 43 17 2 3 55 28 9 5 7 36 29 26 7 10 91 57 59 1.60 2 Oldham Athletic 45 17 4 1 59 22 6 7 10 30 37 23 11 11 89 59 57 1.51 3 Torquay United 46 14 8 1 45 20 6 8 9 30 36 20 16 10 75 56 56 1.34 4 Crewe Alexandra 41 13 4 3 45 19 9 5 7 35 36 22 9 10 80 55 53 1.45 5 Mansfield Town 41 15 4 3 57 20 7 4 8 41 40 22 8 11 98 60 52 1.63 6 Gillingham 41 16 3 3 47 22 4 8 7 19 23 20 11 10 66 45 51 1.47 Table from www.torquayunited-mad.co.uk/footydb/loadgen.asp?Day=06&Month=May&ssnno=92&teamno=525

And, by going further into the Mad sites, you find this league table following the games of 15 May - nine days after our last match:
1 Oldham Athletic 46/59 (1.58) 2 Brentford 44/59 (1.56) 3 Crewe Alexandra 44/56 (1.47) 4 Torquay United 46/56 (1.34) -------------------------------------------- 5 Mansfield Town 44/54 (1.51) 6 Gillingham 44/54 (1.44)
And this for 18 May, twelve days after we'd finished:
1 Brentford 45/60 (1.54) 2 Oldham Athletic 46/59 (1.58) 3 Crewe Alexandra 45/57 (1.47) 4 Mansfield Town 45/56 (1.57) ----------------------------------------- 5 Torquay United 46/56 (1.34) 6 Gillingham 45/55 (1.44)
Still mathematically possible but - and I'm not wholly sure about the number of decimal places used in calculating goal difference - we'd have been hoping for abnormal results for Mansfield and Gillingham on 20 May.
It didn't happen.

Very strange climax to the season as far as we were concerned - after the Newport County match (4th game of the Plainmoor 6), there were only 2 wins in the next 11 games and then 6 wins in the last 8.
At least we didn't throw it away at the death, as has been the case in so many post-war seasons when promotion seemed a certainty.
