Now there's a landmark: Dave Blakey's 600th league game for Chesterfield. 617 in total; 658 when cup games are included.
A Derbyshire Times article quotes Alan Inns of Hasland as saying:
"Dave Blakey was the best player I have seen turn out for Chesterfield. He was a 100 per cent man and a superb captain.
“From the stands you could hear him shouting to the other players, he cajoled some and encouraged others. He always looked after the youngsters and he carried the team for a few years.
“Bill Shankly wanted him at Liverpool but it would not have been worth his while to move as he would only have been £2 a week better off while Dave’s wife ran a successful beer-off at Tibshelf.’’
A beer-off, eh?

Mrs Blakey must have given up her beer-off because Dave went on to be Chief Scout for Burnley. He picked up a couple of local lads from Chesterfield, Terry Pashley and Ian Brennan who went on to have decent careers. Several other kids from North Derbyshire schools had trials at Turf Moor as well, but Burnley got most of their top players from Dave's native North East.
Blakey also signed a Welshman in the back of his car in Scotland. 15 year old Brian Flynn was in Edinburgh with the Welsh schoolboy international side when Dave snapped him up for the Clarets.
