Reply to crazyfool: The number 41 shirt worn by Thompson (squad number 12) was the "blood shirt" - required after Tyrone had an early clash of heads. Ah ... thanks for clearing that up. I missed that somewhere along the line. I was starting to wonder whether our kit suppliers had managed to surpass themselves and not even supplied the correct shirts for the players!!! |

Thanks for all the great match reports, it’s so good to have so many members who do go to away games. While we may all see things differently, the views are always honest and that is all that can be asked. I will post on the thread merse started today about Chris Todd, on this one I just want to give my thoughts on Benyon. Bucks said leaving him out of the first league game, was a very hard decision to make, those who saw him in the PSF games, might feel Benyon was very unlucky not to be picked in the starting eleven. I have read words like” running around like a headless chicken” and also he his lightweight, it was his running and making space to receive good passes, that was the highlight of his performances in the PSF games. Last season high balls were played up to Sills, he then flicked them on as he could not really be expected to do much else with those types of balls up to him. Benyon then had to go and try and win the battle with a defender who was going for the same ball. He was never going to get much joy, as yes being placed in those situations; he is a bit lightweight still. The Brighton game we played the good passing game and Rendall was the perfect partner for Benyon. He had the ball played up to his feet and put the ball into places Benyons pace would get him too. Such balls did not need Benyon to try and win some big battle with a large defender; all he had to do was use his pace to be beyond him into the space the ball had been played too. Bucks went with Tim Sills and Rendall in our first league game, we won two nil and Tim played a big part our second goal. In last nights game he got the team back into the game, with a Tim Sills headed goal. We all know the big part Tim plays in our goal area at set pieces and corners. If Tim does not start we will lose so much of the good things only Tim Sills does, but I do wonder if Rendall and Benyon played upfront together, if we would get more goals. I do think the question needs to be answered and maybe our next game would be the opportunity to give it a proper try. I also think Thompson should start ahead of Hargreaves; I just feel he has more to offer the team; he gets stuck in where needed, is better at passing and is younger and fitter     |

Does this not indicate Benyon would have been the right option?  No it doesn't. At best he's useful to instill a bit of pace and to take advantage of a stretched game in which his marker has been "softened up" and slowed by the attentions of a more physical specimin for an hour or so. He is still a "boy amongst men", still has loads of filling out to do and would never have got near the ball last night until the particular phase of the game he came on for. The manager knows what he is doing, and whilst a relatively pace challenged pairing of Sills and Rendell can adapt their game and get away with it in League 2, they certainly get found out against sides two levels higher. That didn't prevent Sillsy's excellent header to score last night though, but I suspect Benners would have been his usual "headless chicken" flapping all over the place not getting anywhere near the ball if started from the off last night. ! He is far from the finished article, but your labelling of Benyon as a headless chicken is pretty unjustified in my opinion. I thought his introduction really improved our offensive play last night - he deserves credit rather than some muppet saying that he can only do it when the oppostion have been softened up. On what level had the Palace defenders been "softened up" by the time he was introduced? Sills and Rendell had not troubled them all night. If anything complacency would have been more of a problem. Quite frankly, had Benyon played from the start, wearing a headless chicken suit, flapping all over the place (in his usual way apprently!) he could not have had less of an impact that the Sills / Rendell combo in the first half. Not a critisism of their effort, but they were never going to trouble Palace last night. To his credit, Sills will always be a threat from set pieces........luckily for him Elliott came on and started forcing Palace to foul him. A couple of other belated points on last night's game. For the first half I got the impression that our players never really believed that we could get a result and backed off the Palace players far too much. There was very little creation and the ball just wasn't sticking up front. Stevens tried, but his full back generally had the measure of him. As someone else has stated, it just seemed a matter of time. We were far better in the second half, whilst still being far from the type of performance we saw against Blackpool and Cov last year. I agree with the praise for Carlisle. In the two games this season his delivery into the box has been fantastic. He seems to be playing at the top of his game. We looked dangerous also from set-pieces and Nicholson's delivery was back to his best. Can't comment either way about the pen - I have however commented before that I think Robertson and Todd give away too many fouls in dangerous places. Their arms always seem to be all over forwards which is asking for trouble. That said, the ref last night gave us very little. I went last night with a Palace fan. He was very impressed with the away support - best he had seen in five years apprently. |

As one who was asked to make an effort to be "a little less offensive" in their postings, may I request that even those with inadequate social skills observe this protocol?  Don't forget, muppets are puppets; and puppets often require someone to put their finger up their arse in order to make them work and to the hard of hearing someone calling themselves "Enzo" might easily get confused with someone called "Gonzo" and even though you chose to sit in the stinky section on Tuesday night; I'm sure you wouldn't want to be doing that! ;D |

Sorry it took me so long to reply dave been moving house. No the "itch" comment by merse was because me and me mate were staying in paddington which has a few ladies of the night! We did not partake in any of that though, I don't think we could if we tried it was another zider and brandy night!
