swangull wrote As I approached the ground I felt a special buzz about the place something you only get in the Football League.I had the same feelings and I'm sure most fans must have as well, last season we were a non league team playing in a non league ground. If we needed further proof we are now a proper league club again, we need look no further than this game, our first outing in the football league cup for two seasons. Good cup runs are ways that smaller clubs can bring in those extra pounds that help balance out the books and provide money for new players etc. This game is not going to be an easy route into round two, Palace are a good side and they have any home advantage. That I said we have shown we are a good footballing side and our PSF games showed we can equal teams from higher leagues out on the pitch and beat them as well. Our team is very well jelled, playing as a unit and we have players who can influence games, if we get it all right on the night, there is no reason why we could not get the result and be in the hat for round two. Will Bucks stick with the formation from our first league game? or will he play just one up front, that did work in many games played away last season. I would pick the same side that started against Chesterfield, the only changes I would consider is ,Thompson for Hargreaves and maybe have Benyon and Rendall playing upfront together. I would expect some of the capital gulls and a few others will be at the match, so I'm hoping we will get some good match reports. Note to swangull losing a long post has happened to me far too often, I now write such posts in Microsoft word, copy and paste it into my post and only delete it, once I see it on the forum. If you have not seen then yet, we have two great old programmes on the forum from games played against Crystal Palace in the 50's The first one is Crystal Place V Torquay 1st May 1957torquayfansforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=tufchistory&action=display&thread=2133The second one is Crystal Place V Torquay 27th March 1959torquayfansforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=tufchistory&action=display&thread=2052

Bit of a toughie this one with nothing to lose. Can't see there being too many changes from Saturday, injuries excepted. One stat to look at, is there were only two shots on target last Saturday. Although both Rendell and Sills had respectively a decisive part to play in each goal, the question is, are they best suited together or with Benyon? Or, were Chesterfield that good?

Rjd, having only seem Rendall and Benyon play upfront together in a pre season friendly its hard to call. They did play better together in my view than Sills and Rendall did on Saturday. Benyon just has the pace to make the runs that a player like Rendall likes to play the ball into.
Maybe a good game this one to see how they work together in a game that should be that much more competitive.

With the importance that finance plays and the obvious potential rewards for progress, I don't envisage any mucking around with the team over and above obvious changes brought on by fitness issues for a game at a tough Championship venue. Being the second game in four days and with extra time a possibility, expect full use of impact players to come on and do a job later on though. It's a big ask of a newly promoted Conference side to take on and beat Crystal Palace in their own manor and pace is bound to be an issue whenever the home team come forward.................or I would expect it to be! No predictions from me except that the crowd will be sparse and dotted around like peas on a drum skin, and the CGs will meet up in the Alliance pub next to the clock tower outside Norwood Junction Station.

Certainly looking forward to this having read the Herald's interviews with both managers. Although gaffers often just 'talk the talk' and then chuck in some youngsters in this competition, I doubt that will be the case tonight as we could both do with the cash the competition can bring. I think they need it more than us so even GREATER pressure on them to succeed. Like Merse, a trip to The Alliance is on the cards in what is essentially a home game for me. It's my first visit to Selhurst, hopefully we can drag some sort of atmosphere out of the sparse crowd. I'll be going home hoarse as always I expect. At least the pub's on the way back to the station for a bit of 'first aid'

Palace are only opening two stands tonight................The Whitehorse Lane Stand behind the North goal for our fans and the Main (West) Stand for home fans. That means the "usual" visiting facilities are decomissioned for this game and you will be stuck behind the goal or even worse to one side of a goal. Needless to say, I will be seeking to sit side on. £15 admission, £5 concessions..................so I will be "dressing elderly" and hoping to get away with only handing over a fiver!

Shouldn't be a problem for you merse, you've got more chins than a Beijing phone book ;D
Will be interesting to find out how we get on tonight. I'm not going to stay up so will find out the score in the morning. But i'm sure we will give a good account of ourselves and i've got a feeling we could nick it.

As you may know, I won't be around tonight while the game is on, Carol and I will be out having a meal with Stewartb and his wife(not at the Noah's ;D)
Looks like we will have a number of members at the game tonight, so I hope most will put up a match report, or at least their views on the game.
If you are listening on the radio, then some good half time summary's and full times ones, would be really great. It would then be interesting to see how different those listening on the radio may feel a game has gone, compared to those who were at the game live.
Hoping for some really great reports to make our second match day thread as good if not better than the first one.
Thanks in anticipation Dave R

Had we been at home, i'd have given us a reasonable chance of causing an upset in this one. Probably too much to ask away from home though. Hopefully we'll give a good account of ourselves, the squad will come through it without any injuries, and there's no need for extra-time!

Ended 2 - 1 to Palace. Pity about that but at least TUFC can concentrate on the league matches without the distractions of this trophy (every cloud has a silver lining they say, so that must be it!)

Well I was hoping to come home and find a few reports from those who listened on the radio. I know we will get some good reports from those who were at the game, just might have to wait until tomorrow.

Just back from the game. I will not do a full match report as such, just some thoughts on the game.
Overview
Palace dominated possession, and to a lesser extent territory in the first half, but created few real openings. The second half was a more open and even game, although we continued to hold back from the sort of all out attack Palace were committing too.
I suspect this defensive style may become a theme of this season, especially away from home, with us aiming to defend impeccably, frustrate the opposition, and hit them with well organised breaks and set pieces.
While we lost the game, the level of performance, especially at the back gives substantial grounds for optimism for the remaining seasons.
Goals
Palace 1 – 0
Some weak defending (I thought) from Nicky Wroe, allowed the Palace player to get free on the left, and pick out Ambrose for an easy header. Very frustrating as we had defended well to this point, and had started to create one or two chances of our own.
Torquay 1 -1
After Benyon won the foul in the left wing position, Nicholson whipped in a perfect cross which Sills headed home from about 6 yards, having managed to lose his marker in the usual scrum.
Palace 2-1
Grrr. The penalty decision was at the wrong end for me, it looked very soft -Todd (I think) being judged as having pulled back their player. Could easily have been backing in, the ref gave lots of those 50:50 to the attacking player all night. Ambrose sent Beavon the wrong way with a cool spot kick.
Charnock
A superb debut, and my MOTM. On tonight’s evidence, it is hard to imagine the club being able to sign a more capable defender. His positioning, timing of tackles, heading and distribution were all top draw, particularly impressive given the standard of the players he was defending against. I hope he become a first team regular.
Yellow Army
Apparently there were 419 there. In full voice all night, some of the best away support I can recall, especially at this stage of the season.

People will no doubt have different opinions on the penalty, but to me it looked like it was definitely the correct decision. Toddy seem to be all over their player before hauling him to the ground. Having said that there were a few dubious decisions throughout the night.
Overall we should be proud of our performance. In the first half Palace were the better side and it only seemed a matter of time before they scored. We held strong most of the time, but the pace and trickery of Moses was always a big threat. I was happy to see his shot come back off the bar when he looked pretty certain to score. In the second half we seemed to come more into the game, but within 20 minutes we were 1-0 down. Wroe got beaten on the wing .... did the ball go out of play?? ... before a good cross found their player unmarked. Not sure who, but someone should have been picking up Ambrose. We didn't let our heads drop at this point and went in search of an equaliser. When Sills got his goal the crowd went crazy and although Palace were the better side you fancied we might just sneak through. Maybe I was just getting carried away thinking this as less than 5 minutes later Todd gave away the penalty and you knew it was going to take something to get another equaliser. Not that we gave up trying.
This is the first time I've seen the guys this season and I was impressed with the way we played. The new players fit in well and we are not scared to knock it around and try and create openings. Unfortunately for us tonight Palace were always pressing us and gave us very little time and space on the ball. I've no doubt we will have a pretty decent season in League 2.
Great support from those that made the trip. Plenty of noise throughout. Certainly more than their side made. When I say side I literally mean side as that is all they opened for their home fans. Also good to see Paul Bastard dressed in his usual attire including the shorts. More suited to warmth of tonight than some of the nights I've seen him wearing them!!
Last comments before bed are saved for the new kit. In daylight ... or floodlight as it ended up!! ... I really liked the new kit. Much more than in the photos that have been uploaded. A couple of things though. Why was Tyrone Thompson wearing a shirt with number 41 shirt without his name?? And is Danny's shirt so small there is no room for the Eastern eye logo??
