I do wish I could have heard the game on the radio, but I guess we must have played well and I would love to know just good Thompson played with Wroe. I felt in the pre season games they really look good together and maybe they will start again on Saturday. A good win and this has to set us up nicely for our next league game. We have been to Wembley the last two seasons and so far we are still on coarse to go back there again this season

On arriving in Cheltenham early and going to the nearest pub to my mates house named "The Exmouth Arms" I didn't know whether that was a good omen or not. By half time, on reading "Devon Stile" on the ketchup bottles, I knew it was.
A fairly full strength side with Thompson for Hargreaves the only surprise and in the first half we played some sublime pass and move football summed up by Benyon's goal, our second, coming from a move that involved the entire midfield passing from left to right with an "on a sixpence" cross from Carlisle that was wonderfully glanced home.
We started brightly and its probably fair to say the opposition failed to turn up until 5 minutes into the second half. Both Carlisle and Stevens were electric in that half. And Thompson, breaking down everything - I can't recall Cheltenham stringing together more than 1 pass - and supplying the wings well. Wroe looked disinterested for most of the night, except when he took penalty duties off of Stevens in the second half, much to the annoyance of the 200ish Gulls support and, its fair to say, one or two team mates.("Danny would've scored it") Its easy to say we looked solid in defence but they were not tested.
The first a good move down the right, crossed by Carlisle, Sills knocked it further on and Stevens had enough time to take a touch with his left before drilling a low shot to the keepers left and into the corner. The second seemed to take a long time coming given the huge amount of possession and territory we had, but as described was a joy to see. The third, on the stroke of half time killed the game off as a contest and was similar in it's build up and finish as the first goal.
No doubt Mad Dog Martin Allen laid into his troops at the break and soon after the restart it appeared they had woken up. The appearance of Hayles and Alsop added more threat up front, Hayles in particular seeming up for it having first conned the referee into a booking for Charnock then earning himself a yellow for going berserk at an offside decision. Of course it was offside - he's hardly going to run past anyone at his age!. Their only player in the first half, Josh Low, eventually finished off a period of play which saw Wroe then Todd not make a tackle, the ball springing from left to right with various Cheltenham touches and not a Gull in sight, then a decent half volley to Bevan's right.
Obviously before that was the Wroe penalty miss. Its a shame it didn't go in as I would have liked Buckle to have had a bit of freedom to experiment at 4-0 should he have chosen to. We didn't make it hard work, but there were some very casual moments in the second half defensively. One in particular, Robertson gave away a reasonably quickly taken free kick on our right. I say reasonably quickly, the reality was he had time to get back and Todd had time to get over to Hayles, but the taker put a 10 yard slowished paced pass to a totally unmarked Hayles on the edge of the box, though fortunately for us he fluffed his lines.
We started going forward a bit more in the latter stages as the umph went out of Cheltenham with some of the quality link up play of the first half re-appearing. Benyon and Stevens came off to decent appreciation - they were probably the best players on the pitch (hmm...I'll go for Thompson) though I was concerned when Sills seemed to look for any option other than to shoot when putting Rendell in on goal later on. I do hope he gets his confidence back soon.
A good night out. Thompson was a big plus point. Stevens, Benyon and Carlisle were excellent. Que sera.......Wembley? Anyone know when we were last 3-0 up at half time?

Brings memories of .Connell and his autograph hunting antics to mind!

Confidence boosting performance by the sound of things that we can hopefully take into a very difficult game on Saturday. This result must be put into some sort of perspective though as it was only the Johnsons Paint Trophy soon to be renamed once again the Walt Disney Trophy .....you know where I'm coming from ;D

Exeter at home or Southampton would be nice. A decent gate = some extra money in the bank.

The draw for the next round is on saturday on Soccer AM. The teams that we can be drawn against are: Aldershot Bournemouth Exeter Hereford Southampton Swindon Wycombe According to my local rag--Wycombe got beat by Northampton (I only looked earlier for a "local" game for me). On the same subject (sorry if this is obvious) but I also thought Norwich were in Southern section last night (again according to my rag). So my two questions are : 1/ Does the regional section change or is the above info not quite right? 2/ Norwich away?? is that really possible and feasible in this Trophy?

Wycombe did get knocked out on penalties by Northampton and the Southern Section is split into Western and Eastern Divisions. Our draw is as Darren suggested but with Northampton instead of Wycombe. Think we play down to a Southern Section (West) final then meet the Southern Section (East) winner to decide the Wembley finalist.

Brings memories of .Connell and his autograph hunting antics to mind! I'm sure he'll be forgiven. Singling him out for a rollocking is a sign of just how well he played in this instance, I suspect. Though I guess he is the most likely to make way for Williams.

I want to listen to his post match interview as well, is it available anywhere other than Gullsplayer ?
With confidence playing such a huge factor in how well professional footballers perform, the decision not to let Stevens take the penalty seems a little odd. We are told that Wroe appeared disinterested that evening & was clearly off his game, while in comparison Danny was obviously brimming with confidence having already hit the net twice. Has the lad ever got a hat-trick in professional football before ? I know he scored two against Yeovil in the F.A Cup .
Frankly you can understand the lads enthusiasm to complete his hat-trick, we're already three nil up against a well beaten Cheltenham team who clearly would rather be at home watching TV. It's not a promotion clincher nor is it likely to have a bearing on the outcome of the match. Was there much chance that if Stevens had missed we would have collapsed & let Cheltenham score three, followed by recriminations in the dressing room... "you should never have let Danny take that penalty Boss, that's where it all went wrong."
I would have expected Wroe to gladly let Stevens complete his hat-trick & Bucks to have weighed up the circumstances & not taken a clunking fist approach to things.
Bucks can congratulate himself in presiding over a good team performance & getting the result that was wanted, but I would have liked to have heard his views on the penalty taker.
