This is the programme for the Notts County home match played on the 19th of November, 1949 and is interesting for a number of points. It was the second time that County visited Plainmoor with the great Tommy Lawton in the forward line. The first being the season before when dreadful weather kept the attendance down to just over 10,000. This time though the crowd numbered 13,824, a new record at Plainmoor, beating the previous season's visit of Exeter City by 148. (*see below) The score was 0-0, surprising when the two teams lined up with Lawton & Sewell up-front for County whilst United had the legend-to-be Don Mills now slotted into one of Torquay's greatest ever attacking front lines. This was the season that Notts County won the Third Division (South) securing the Championship with a win over cross-river rivals Nottingham Forest at the end of April having played United at Meadow Lane a fortnight before. At this point we had become their nearest rivals, unfortunately falling away with a dreadful end of season run having seen Don Mills return to QPR after his initial loan period and manager John McNeil depart for Bury. (The programme and details for this away match are interesting in itself and will follow later) * In the statistics section of the Official Centenary History, Leigh Edwards has the attendance for the Exeter City game down correctly as 13,676 but in the actual script states ‘Over 14,000 saw United win an exciting game…’

Sorry Tim... I should've checked. It was just I had it in front of me as I have the pair with the away game and wanted to do both as a comparison... Anyway, saved you having to do all the scanning!

Spent most of Saturday evening scanning eight programmes including this one! But it does not matter at all.

There’s been so much to look at in these old programmes during the season, that it’s been hard to keep up and pass comment on all of them.
Two observations from this one.
Firstly, those organised excursions by rail – one to Ashton Gate on Boxing Day (no trains at Christmas nowadays – and nor for many a year) and a Paignton supporters trip all the way to Gravesend. Makes you wonder when the first and, I suppose, the last of this type of trip took place.
Secondly, the formation of a Newton Abbot branch of the supporters club. There’s a couple of Gilpins on the committee list and – all these years later – I believe Gilpin Demolition has been involved in sponsoring Newton Abbot Spurs. Same family?
