Sorry I missed these pictures Stuart, so many places I drove through in South Wales were just like the ones in your pictures, all built in valleys and houses just clinging to the hillside.
I'll have a look on some maps tomorrow to check out where these places are.

Stuart, talking specifically about the Rhondda - both Rhondda Fawr and Rhondda Fach - would you say it's more of a rugby area, a football area or roughly split? Or, indeed, is it not particularly good at either?
At one stage - either side of WW1 - it must have been shaping up to be quite a football area with Ton Pentre, Maerdy, Porth and Mid Rhonnda all playing in the Southern League (with nearby Pontypridd, Treharris, Merthyr and Aberdare and some of the Monmouthshire teams also playing at that level).
My football travels in that area are restricted to a game at Ton Pentre in their early League of Wales days - a fine cultural experience of course - but a few valleys away, with all this talk of a Bridgend/Merthyr merger, I'm starting to fear that Penydarren Park may have eluded me for good.

The Rhondda is a big rugby area but also has a large following of Cardiff City. I would say the majority is rugby but not by much.
My work colleague is the the player-manager of Merthyr, Garry Shephard. They are confident that things will work out but need to raise £50k just to go into administration. they should do that but will start next year with -10 points but as Garry says they lost the first 3 last season, so what's the difference? with better finance they could have pushed for promotion last year but ran out of steam when players weren't being paid.
Don't worry, i think you'll still have the pleasure of Penydarren Park. Romford Kev has enjoyed Penydarren once or twice. give me a shout and I'll meet you for a game next season.

Good one, Stuart. I'll be keeping an eye open for their fixtures in that case!
