I'd been watching football at Plainmoor with someone for years before we discovered that, for both of us, our first visit to Wembley had been for a schools' international in 1971. Did anybody else go on this type of trip? This was the age of the football special - a chartered train laid on for a particular match - this one being organised by the local schools' FA running direct from South Devon to Wembley Central. Each school had its' own carriage - or two - and I remember on the return journey a rumour spreading that such-and-such school was going to attack our carriage at nine o'clock. We sat there waiting, scraves tied in knots, but nothing happened. What did happen, in the spirit of the football specials of the time, is that certain individuals threw light bulbs, bottles and loo rolls from the windows. This game was played at under 15 level - I was that age at the time - and featured 4th year (year 10) pupils. Until around 1971 you could leave school at the end of the 4th year, so this represented the most senior age group of those who had to be at school. You'll not see too many star names on the team sheets. Although many England Schools players went on to become stars, a lot didn't. Equally many future stars didn't feature in schools' games for whatever reason - the likes of Peter Reid, Tony Woodcock and Viv Anderson would have been 4th years at this time. The stand-out name is Martin Jol on the Dutch team. For England, only Brian Bason (Chelsea, Argyle, Palace) and Steve Powell (Derby) had notable league careers. This was still the era of community singing as you'll see from the songsheet cover. We must have joined in, whistled or remained sullenly silent for Congratulations, Boom Bang-a-Bang, Lily the Pink, The End of the Road, John Brown's Body, She'll Be Comin' Round the Mountain and Clementine. Oh, and not forgetting Rupert the Bear who must have been in his heyday. Scroll down and you'll see Rupert, recast as Rupture, acting out a contemporary football scene. This is taken from Foul, an alternative and often scurrilous football magazine of the day.

It's noticeable how few English Schools' Internationals ever made the pro' game and this team is no exception..................only Steve Powell went on to make a really top career out of that lot with Derby County. However, there is a name there who went on to play for Torquay United. Puzzled? A clue to the answer lays in the opposition. So who was it and what's the origin of the clue?

I do have a diary kept of our school trip around the Med ina converted troop ship which I think was reconverted back to a troop ship in the Falklands.

I only went to one schools boy International and I was not a school boy ;D When Ant was at primary school( Upton Vale) I aways helped the PE teacher with football practice.
The school arranged a trip to watch England play Germany and as I helped out, with the football, I was asked to go as well.
So I guess It must be about 23 years ago, I do know It was In April. We got up all happy on the day only to see snow everywhere. We did not think we would be watching a game that day. Snow was everywhere on our way to London and that was my first time to the old Wembley, tears filled my eyes when I saw Inside for the very first time.
I think England lost the game, I will have to ask Ant what he remembers, players etc.

So far I've got:
Danny Hollands a near anagram of Veysey a reminder of Jim De Garis an acronym in TUYP (Torquay United Youth Policy?) William of Orange landing at Brix'um The Prince of Orange at Barton Dean Stevens (now at Dawlish)
I'm not even warm am I?

I went on the train with Sherwell Valley 1974. We thrashed West Gemany and Peter Coyne scored a hat trick - think he went on to play for Crewe! Kenny Sansom played.

However, there is a name there who went on to play for Torquay United. The player was Kevin Ayres who was signed by Malcolm Musgrove from Dutch club Telstar...................didn't play a lot of games, he was a Geordie if I recall correctly.

That was Colin Ayre, Merse, but you're right in that he was from Ashington (ex NUFC) and was signed from Telstar.
Ken Ayres in the England schools programme is an interesting one: short-time as a pro with Man Utd, six appearances for Palace, no further games in the Football League (according to Barry Hugman's book of players' records).

I do recall Colin Ayres was known to Malcolm Musgrove who knew of him him as a school boy protege from the North East who had "lost his way" somewhat and he duly did what all good lower league managers do and "took a punt".

Merse, Not sure if many of the Dutch players went on to play professional football. I only know Jol. Maybe some of the others played in the Eerste Divisie or Eredivisie but their names don't ring bells for me.

Merse, it's actually a wonder we remember some of these players in any way at all.
These words from your posting probably apply to more than one player we've had over the years:
from the North East who had "lost his way" somewhat
