The poor team was the one with the over-rated under-achievers, premiership stars from all the big clubs that didn`t bother and don`t care, not us! No poorly performing nation, be it Australia, England or anyone else should be in denial from the FACT that they did indeed under perform. Because another country performs badly does not mean one's own performance somehow miraculously becomes better. There were more than enough squads who underperformed..................in no particular order, France, Italy, Greece, Brazil, Argentina, Nigeria, incurred the wrath of their public for either collective or particularly "fatally" poor shows in the knock out stages; and no doubt there were others. I think one pertinent point has been overlooked when surveying all this underperforming and in the search for the reasons for it. In 1966 when England won it, the date of the Final of a 16 team tournament was July 31st . The whole tournament took less than three weeks to stage and thus ALL the European based players were able to enjoy a break between the end of their domestic seasons and preparation for the World Cup so that they entered it in a refreshed and certainly far from stale state of mind and body which is the collective problem these days as I see it. Six to eight weeks more to relax and then prepare, two weeks less spent at the tournament and exclusion of all the dross teams like Australia, New Zealand and North Korea who would all struggle to hold onto a Football League Championship place would be a start in returning to the days of the truly best of World football being on view at the World Championships. The European Championships are now going down the same politically expedient and revenue chasing road to ruination that the World Cup has with a ridiculous increase from 16 to 24 finalists being made provision for in 2016. We're going to see nations like Scotland and Wales qualifying for Christ's sake, what's the point of that? Ludicrous! What's the point of holding a Championship Finals when it includes scrubbing brush teams that could never dream of ever winning it and perform cartwheels if they ever emerge from the group stages. Those teams need to qualify on merit, not geographical convenience.

1966 `eh, 44 years ago and you`ve been nothing but shit ever since so get off your high horse and stop bleating on about ancient history, you lot were a scrubbing brush team in this world cup you achieved sweet f.a, you got bulldozed by the Germans just like we did only you had eleven men on the pitch and still conceeded 4 goals! Typically pompus of you to come out with that crap! England were just as dross as anyone else, no wonder the Jocks get pissed off with you English banging on about one flukey year many moons ago, you really must get over it and try and understand that you are a pants outfit run by a bunch of Muppets in blazers that haven`t got a clue or any grasp on reality! We might have under-achieved but at least we`re not over-rated, over-paid and pompous! Oh I nearly forgot your the only ones that are allowed to patriotic aren`t you and we must all bow down to your superiority oh pretentious one! Good morning!

Did I hear that we went up one place in the FIFA rankings on the back of our World Cup performance?
Still, at the end of the day it's nice to have won it - who cares how many years ago.

Whilst I am in minority, I still feel if 'the goal that was had counted' we would have come out in the second half at 2 - 2, game on. We will never know........... Although you were robbed because we all know that ball crossed the line, I don`t think it would have made the blindest bit of difference to the outcome because Germany had the ability to go up gear and they did and England just couldn`t match them, where as Australia got stuffed in the first half, well and proper, we came out in the second half and did match them until we went down to ten men, then we couldn`t match them! I know what you say about the second goal could have changed the game and I have seen it happen where it has indeed changed the game but I`m afraid in that game there was only ever going to be one outcome! It`s a shame but the Premiership is wrecking your International situation some what old bean, and that little rant of mine earlier wasn`t aimed at you as you probably have gathered! It may not sit well with the English that their team is pants at the moment but it`s not my fault or Australia's so people like that earlier poster who can`t help having a dig at us given any opportunity should and need to be told the truth, it might hurt but that`s just how it is! Wondering how scournful his next episode will be, no doubt he will find something else derogatory to sling my way!

1966 `eh, 44 years ago and you`ve been nothing but shit ever since........... I think you'll find we've only been shit for a mere 20 years! We were good in 1990 and went out of the competition without losing a game, after drawing 1-1 in a memorable semi-final against the Germans where we were the better team until the lottery competition to decide who went through. I don't count the 2-1 defeat to Italy in the pointless 3rd/4th play off game as we were already out of the competition by then and most of the players from both sides would have preferred to have been home with their families rather than playing a meaningless game. Couldn't agree more about the arrogant, over paid, and over rated bunch of losers that has made up the bulk of the England team in recent years. A bad example to the youth of our country both on the pitch and with their off field activities. Celebrities? No ... Bobby Charlton, Bobby Moore, Stanley Matthews, Alf Ramsay, Matt Busby, Eusebio, Lev Yashin, Trevor Brooking and Gary Lineker were celebrities .... but we didn't use the expression in those days!

I thought that "being sectioned for 28 days" would have taught Aus to finally read posts and read them properly before firing off...............may I suggest that either partaking in some sex or masturbation might calm you down instead. I think only a raving lunatic would have translated my previous post on this thread as pretending in anyway that England had achieved anything but sink to the level of those scrubbing brush teams So now we've got that little tantrum out of our system, are we really so deluded as to imagine it was only the dismissal of a journeyman striker who can't challenge for a ball properly that cost Australia parity with an accomplished team like Germany? ...............and whilst we're at it, what about the underperforming French, Nigerians, Cameroonians, Italians and Greeks then ~ nothing to do with being jaded and battle weary before the tournament had even begun? That was in my response too, but as usual you were so pre-occupied with your raving and ranting you completely missed that point.

Perhaps Merse doesn`t realize it but he types insults and then declares he never typed them! You need to address your style of typing and try to stop coming across as so clever, as you think anyway, how about you re-read what you have typed and see if there might just be degrading, derogatory, insulting drivel in what your trying to say, perhaps you don`t mean to slag people off all the time, maybe you just can`t help it because of your horrible make-up and nature doesn`t allow you to be pleasant! It ain`t the way I read it it`s the way you type it, you always use this poor excuse with everyone " well if you read my post properly " line, well just maybe it`s the way or style you type in pal! Never considered that have you because your arrogance gets in the way!

So how come the first respondent to my post concurs 100%, yet YOU go off the deep end Aus? Most of us on here have had a lifetime of supporting a crap football team in the lowest divisions of the Football League and accept that with good nature. The team YOU supported in the World Cup was crap, just like the one I supported. Whereas most of us on here who so badly wanted England to do well acknowledged how poor they were and advanced constructive theories as to how that could be addressed; YOU go into one and churlishly blame the referee whilst choosing to put forward delusional views of your team's capabilities. Look mate, you need to calm down and enjoy yourself a little bit more instead of setting yourself up as some wind up toy nearly every morning you come on here. If a Brazilian takes the piss out of England I just get on with it because they have a World Cup record far superior to us. If I choose to be disdainful of footballing nonentities like Scotland, Wales and Australia as a supporter of a nation that HAS won a World Cup, did as (Stefano says) come very damned close to winning another and was indeed playing at a pretty acceptable standard until 20 years ago; then you can either lump it, or choose to play with those nonentities rather than in World Cups where you are going to look pretty well short of the standard required to be successfull. I happen to believe that too many dross entrants in the World Cup finals lowers the standard and that the process of accomodating them all unessecarily prolongues the competition. I think the qualification for them should be based on merit and not geographical expediency and yes, I readily concur that England might well not manage to get there under a more merit based qualifying system.......................so be it, England are crap, and so are Australia. Get used to it, and stop claiming some people are picking on YOU for pointing that out!
