We mentioned Barnstaple winning the Devon Bowl and us signing Pat Fewings afterwards on Dave's Barnstaple thread. Now we have confirmation here courtesy of Timbo.
I didn't know that Scrumpy Calland used to coach the grammar school snobs.I have heard that the ground at Barton Road / Cricketfield Road, where Merse tells use that Calland was the resident groundsman, was once upon a time used by TBGS for sports. Does anybody know when this went on until?

Ah, the mysteries of the Devon Bowl in the early to mid 1950s. The details on Greens on Screen are very similar to those quoted in Mike Holgate's Devon Derbies book (I wonder if the copy I saw in Waterstone's in Glasgow ever sold?). Possibly a case of "not played" and "not recorded" being mixed up at some stage? Certainly there's no indication of any north Devon representation but we appear to know differently. Where's the trophy these days?

I know that the 1953 Bowl in which Barnstaple beat Torquay and Plymouth was the first to include "semi-pros". The last to do so was the 1959 Bowl which saw us beat Bideford in the semi-finals. The 1960 and 1961 Bowls were a straight match between Argyle and a Combined Exeter/Torquay XI. Remarkaby, each of the five Bowls in between saw us drawn against Argyle in the semis. I guess that means that Exeter played Barnstaple, Bideford or someone else in a semi-final in each of those seasons - but I don't know for sure.
