 So United even had their own motor coach to transport the reserves in and act as a shuttle bus to pick their own players up from the station. From this description of it's uses (not for First Team travel) one can only surmise it was not exactly luxury travel and maybe the fifties equivelant of the modern day club minibuses that so many clubs use. Mind you, most First Team games involved train travel in those far off days. Wouldn't it be marvelous if someone found a picture of this beast.......................I have visions of the Tor Bus Company c1960s at it's finest!

A player-manager and "a famous name in big time soccer". Does that describe Eric Webber who was appointed two days before the Leyton Orient game and made his debut in that match?
At first you'd think not until you check and see that Southampton finished near the top of the old Division Two several times in the late 1940s. In that context signing Webber was probably quite a coup.

I'm a little confused at the reference to the Board being "limited ... at present to three members". There are five directors listed who, checking Timbo's other scans on here, were all on the Board the previous season and still there a couple of months after this game. George Gillin had taken over the Chairmanship from Rowland Ward in the summer and the "Supporters' Club Rep" appears to have vanished. What was that one about? The emergency was the departure of Alex Massie - the third manager to leave in 18 months. It makes you wonder how long the next one would last.  John Lovis tells us that Massie "resigned after a disagreement with the Board over various matters of club policy". Does anybody know what those were? Was it a case of the manager expecting the Board to spend money they didn't have and the Board disagreeing? As an aside, John Lovis tells is that Eric Webber was appointed on General Election day. The Tories didn't even last as long as the new TUFC manager - Harold Wilson beating Frank O'Farrell to it by seven months. |
