Today was my first visit to Canvey Island. I scoured the web for an interesting friendly today and it doesn't come any more interesting than Canvey Island V FC Twente Enschede, who are the current Dutch Eredivisie Champions and were guided to the title by Steve McClaren. McClaren is now coaching Bundesliga side Wolfsburg and he's been replaced at Twente by ex Belgian national keeper Michel Preud'Homme who is probably famous over here for being the keeper who failed to stop David Platt's marvellous swivel volley in Bologna at Italia 90.
However this Twente Enschede side were mainly made up of reserves, academy players and under 23 players.
It was a glorious sunny day in Essex and it was 8 quid to get in with a programme seller after the turnstiles to help decide what to do with the 2 quid change! So I took my place on the terrace and neatly bumped into Romford Kev and his good lady.
Anyway, it was an enjoyable game. Twente Enschede won 5-0 and they were a classy looking team who have two excellent wideman in Jules Reimerink who played 38 games on loan at Go Ahead Eagles and Norwegian Flamur Kastrati.
But in all in an enjoyable day trip. Yet another small club who are dilligently run by a group of very committed locals. Most of who waited patiently for the FC Twente team to warm down before giving them very generous applause. A nice touch I thought and one that didn't cost anything.
Anyway some photos.
A passing ship leaving Tilbury Docks just down the road.
Megastore indeed!
Romford's answer to David Bailey
Asamoah Gyan's penalty shot finally reaches the UK!
Jules Remerink
He'll be a brave man in January
Flamur Kastrati
A graduate of the Arjan Robben School of Needless Acrobatics
Did you get a good shot of his nostrils Kev?
The sunbaked terraces..
