Transfer requests from Towers AND Reid? Must be due to Mr Webber's poor man-management skills, mustn't it? There couldn't possibly be any other explanation, could there?   It's a great truism that thunder only happens when it's raining and players only love you when they're playing - whatever the club, whoever the manager. Towers was out in the cold as Hugh Brown and Gordon Pembery established a wing-half pairing. Pembery had been Cameron's wing partner at the end of the previous season, before shifting position to join Brown's wing-half party. After Pembery's big money move to Charlton, Towers came back into the team, came off the transfer list and stayed for another four years. |

After Pembery's big money move to Charlton.... Just noticed the programme mentions that Charlton manager Jimmy Seed was at Eastville and speculates that he was spying on Rob's grandad's favourite player Ronnie Shaw. We all know who he was really spying on though, don't we? |

Gordon Pembery (as mentioned by Jon) Joined Charlton Athletic some weeks after this game, after making 55 appearances for United. He went on to play 18 games for the Addicks before moving to Swindon Town where he only played a few games before heading for non-league Headington on their way to becoming Oxford United. He obviously struggled to get first team action as his first two league clubs before United were Norwich City (one appearance) and then his hometown club Cardiff City (one appeareance). His autograph is top-left on the 1951/52 sheet below, and he must've left soon after as the original owner has noted that he now plays for Charlton. Five other players from this line-up against Argyle have put their names to paper being goalkeeper George Webber, Sammy Collins, Tommy Northcott, Dave Topping and Ralph Calland. It looks like Calland signed this sheet twice, but is it possible that the other Calland signature is his brother Albert? Although they are very similair autographs there are subtle differences. Also on the sheet are Bill Towers (who as mentioned above was wanting away and having his transfer request accepted, but obviously ended up staying), Dennis Lewis, John Reid (who also wanted to leave but had his request refused but joined Weymouth some months later) and Bob Warren, the latter only managing five appearances for Torquay so quite lucky to get this signature. |
