After a bit of deliberation this morning I decided to go and pay a visit to Tooting and Mitcham's Imperial Fields ground to see their opening Isthmian Premier Division game with Hendon.
Imperial Fields has been Tooting and Mitcham's Ground since 2002. It's a very nice Stadium indeed, though I would imagine that it gets colder than Siberia in mid winter though the Bovril only costs 50p! The stadium holds 3,500 and has one smart all seater stand and two decent sized terraces at both ends which have roofs that cover the middle part of the terrace. The other side is just a fence. The main stand also houses a Community Gym and a bar I believe although I've never been one for the halftime pint.
The game was a very good one and although this is a division below the Blue Square South I've seen worse matches in the Blue Square Premier. Tooting and Mitcham have now got ex Millwall Player Mark Beard in charge and he's used his connections to get a couple of very decent strikers in on loan from Millwall. Barry Stevens is a clever player who holds the ball up well and passes very well. The other lad is 18 year old Kiernan Mason-Hughes who I think will go on to have a very decent career. He had a spell on loan at Cheltenham last year. He got a hat-trick today and has pace, movement and an eye for goal. What's also nice about him that instead of showboating his dribbling he seems to prefer to pick out a team mate with a pass. Unusual for a young player. Other players of note for Tooting were centre midfielder Karl Beckford and pacey left winger Phil Williams. As for Hendon. Left winger Belal Aite-Ouakrim and centre forward Aaron Morgan both impressed. The latter scoring two goals. Later on in the game Tooting and Mitcham unleashed another decent centre forward, a bloke called Junior Gymsiah. An absolute brute of a man. He's good in the air, has a decent touch and likes to run with the ball at his feet. I get the impression that most forwards on display today could play at a higher level.
So all in all an enjoyable afternoon in South London. The game ended 4-3 in Tooting and Mitcham's favour in front of 313 souls.
Some photos.
I thought this may be Boncho Guenchev as his son Lubomir plays for Hendon. But maybe it was Carbone from the film Goodfellas.
Is that all you bring away?
A few "match atmosphere" shots!
No ball boys, a leap of faith and lurker in the bushes!
Junior Gymsiah.
Ball from Ryman's
Nicola Upward. The Tooting and Mitcham Physio. I have a feeling they'll have to queue for the treatment table this season. "My groin's a bit tight darling"
