I also played for Harbertonford Reserves in my youth. Small world....... when were you there? I was there approx 1979-1982. as you are obviously younger than me, perhaps you heard about the legend that was StuartB Not sure to be honest Stuart (the recollection of dates of dates escapes me) - but I would hazard a guess at somewhere between 1985 and 1987......and NO, I NEVER HEARD OF YOU!! ;D I also played for Chelston U18's, and latterly for Paignton Villa alongside a certain jmgull - or should I say "behind" him - I played in goal!! With reference to Steve "Mr. Harbertonford FC" Jane, I went to KEVICS at Totnes, and there was a NIGEL JANE - was this one of his sons?

We trained at KEVICS, even had Graham Jones, TUFC, coach a few sessions. Afterwards we enjoyed a couple of britvic orange and lemonades at the Steam Packet Boat, Totnes

Of course, when I say Buckfastleigh, I actually meant BUCKFASTLEIGH RANGERS - but lets not split hairs! BUCKFASTLEIGH. Can't be many football teams in the world who play in a town, city or village with a name made up of 13 letters of the alphabet with not one letter repeated.

With reference to Steve Mr. Harbertonford FC Jane, I went to KEVICS at Totnes, and there was a NIGEL JANE - was this one of his sons? Nigel was a very competent goalkeeper if I remember correctly and he is indeed one of Steve's sons. Steve Jane was (and still is I guess) one of the most genuinely nice men one could ever wish to meet and he always made it a real pleasure to visit his club. Steve's trouble was though that so nice was he that when marking a referee, his idea of a really low mark was 8 out of 10 and so many "10s" did he hand out that they were somewhat devalued. I remember being in the living room of the late Fred Hewings who was the refereeing "Godfather" of South Devon one evening, and he was taking me through my club markings (which was strictly not allowed) and when we got to Harbertonford he said "well ten from Steve Jane ~ we'll call that a six then". Fred could be a wickedly mischevious old sod, and if you ever complained to him about getting a certain appointment he would regail you with stories of how "in his day" he used to cycle from Kingsteignton out to Chagford and Moreton, ref the games and the cycle all the way home again. I used to love seeing him, Harry Treeby, Bll Treeby, Ray Harris, Steve Jane, Bill Davey and Merv Benney, all come toddling down the lane together behind Plainmoor's grandstand for the evening fixtures.................talk about "Last of the Summer Wine"!We used to call them "The Frail Blazers" ;D
