I’m surprised just how many 1950s programmes Timbo has posted without reply. We must have started to take these for granted after a while.
So, a last one for me for now. The start of another season: Ipswich dispatched to the tune of 4-1. A few people may have doubted Alf Ramsey’s ability, after a fine debut season, to ever make it as a manager. “Sort it out, Alf” they said on the long old haul back to Suffolk.
But Ipswich had the last laugh when they pipped us to the divisional title on goal average. Our goals tally away from home – scored 18, conceded 46 – did for us in the end.
News here of Roy Milton making his Plainmoor return after being lured away to Gigg Lane by former manager John McNeil.
Raymond Mayne joining from Cullompton and some cracking “local boys” coming through: George Northcott, Peter Wakeham and Graham Bond.
Not that I remember any of them.

I remember being at tis game. We hammered the eventual champions 4-1. John anderton scored one of the goals. He got injured in the game and was moved to theleft wing. He was a really promising player but the injury must have been serious because I don't believe he featured much more that season. It was a shame because although we were prolific scorers we did concede a lot. For instance beating millwall at home 7-2 and losing the game at the den by the same scoreline.

As I only (!!! ) go back as far as the early 70s, I love posts like this one from Phipsy recalling the 50s or 60s.
