We (well mostly Mrs Chelston) are interested in tracing our family tree. So Sunday we decided to try and find some information out on my Great Grandmother and Great-great Grandfather. Hence we headed off to Diptford (couple of miles near Avonwick). Just turned off Avonwick to see the old railway station (assume it's part of the Primrose line Dave?), thought I'd get a picture on the way back but found ourselves driving out of Dipford another way. It was nice to see the Church unlocked and we spent 1/2 an hour or so trying to trace my decedents without much luck. Thought it was nice that there was note in the Church entrance informing folk that if they wanted further information giving the names and addresses of local people they could speak with. (as it was a Sunday we didn't want to intrude). I noticed a board with all the men who had died in WW1 who lived in the parish - 9 people (Legg) died during the war. A sobering thought in such a small parish 9 men who I would have thought came from the same family all died. I guess we will have to go back and ask about a bit. p.s. Dave, the fire yesterday was caused by two travelers caravans on the Bookhams site being torched.

Phil the station you saw was Avonwick station and yes it was part of the Primrose line. I think its really wonderful that the three middle stations on the Primrose line have all been converted into family homes and have therefore been saved and preserved.
I suppose the need to use the land in Kingsbridge for a small industrial estate and in South Brent for a car park were felt greater than the need to preserve the station buildings and it’s a bit of a shame as it would have been great if all five could have been kept. Still Avonwick, Gara bridge and Loddiswell stations are all still standing and looking good and will be around for many years to come so those interested in the Primrose line and still see much evidence of it.
Weather permitting Carol and I will spend this coming Sunday afternoon in Diptford and I hope to try and find some old track bed to walk on in the area. Failing that I plan to walk from Diptford to Gara Bridge in the hope I can find the few missing bridges I have not found yet that carried the Primrose line over the river Avon.
Feel free to join us if you are doing nothing special
